Was Jonah really swallowed by a whale? Or is the book of Jonah just a fable to learn about running from God?

Thanks;

Corey

The pastor is doing a series on Jonah, and I have to admit, it seems a bit strange to me that a whale would swollow a man. THen spit him out after 3 days, alive & well.

Greetings Mr. Corey,

Jesus called Jonah a "prophet":

Matthew 12:39-40 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Do you suppose Jesus lied or just referred to an allegory?

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

I read that a sperm whale can easily swallow a man whole.....

Esaily could get stuck in it's throat.

Then threw it up again.......

Very likely...

Even a killer whale was reported to do that in the modern day surfer world.

Dear Dad Ernie;

I truly am not trying to argue, nor am I trying to blaspheme. I'm just trying to see if it really happened. I just don't know how somebody can survive 3 days in the belly of a whale. It just sounds funny to me. And I in no wise wish to call JEsus a liar. That is farthest from my mind.

Blessings;

Corey

How did Jesus turn water into wine?

How did Jesus bring Lazarus back to life?

How did Jesus heal the sick?

How did Jesus feed thousands on a couple fish?

It's called a miracle!

Yeah, Jonah was indeed swallowed by a great fish.

Actually, the text says Jonah got swallowed by a "great fish" - so it doesn't have to be a whale.

It's really true. The Lord is in charge of the whales and everything else. Jonah was deceived and thought He could run from God. The Lord doesn't use false stories to bring about good. His power and glory are real.

Greetings Mr. Corey,

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to accuse you of anything. I was just pointing out the possibilities if the story of Jonah was not true.

A little while back I heard about some research done by this scientist and as it turns out, Jesus JONAH was not the only one to survive being swallowed by a "big fish". There is a species of whale that can swallow a man whole, and there has been at least one case in relatively recent history where the man survived, but came out mottled because of the acids on the whales stomach. It was a very interesting program.

Blessings,

Dad Ernie
