Have any of you heard of the Bach Flower remedies?

If so could you please give me your opinion as to whether they are any good, and as to whether it is OK to use them?

Warning I am a pharmacist.

I did some checking on that stuff. Personally I think it is junk. Heres why.

This is the philosophy behind the "remedies":

Dr. Bach believed that the source of all illness is conflict between one's higher self, which wishes to realize its full potential, and the personality (or ego) which may obstruct this realization through limiting beliefs and actions. This obstruction expresses itself through blockages which prevent the wishes of the higher self from being heard, as illustrated in this case history.

Because each essence has the same energy as that of the desire the higher self wishes to fulfill it is able to make direct contact with this energy, strengthening the higher self to dissolve the energy blockages.

Energies? Higher self? This is new age nonsense.

The remedies are based on the names of the plant and some long forgotten emotion attributed to that plant. It isnt even remotely based on the herbals that are used today like St Johns Wort. There is nothing to these "remedies" except your basic snake oil medicine...in other words, nonsense. Dont waste your money.

In general I dont think much of herbals. The act of congress that allowed them prohibits any govt regulation of them. Basically, any herbal can make any claim they want to and no one can stop them until it kills someone. Studies have shown a wide discrepancy in quality control. For example, if an herbal pill claims to have 100 mg of ginseng, it can have 0 mg of ginseng in it and still be called ginseng. It can also have large contaminants of arsenic in it too, and no one can do anything about it. The study used well known brands of herbals and found these results.

That said, st johns wort has been shown to have the same properties as an ssri antidepressant. However since the amount of st johns wort in the pills can vary, how well it works is iffy.
