When someone you don't even know sneezes, We generally say, "God bless you!" Why? Are blessings they loosely given? Is it superstition? Do demons cause sneezes in someone's simple mind?

Wow.

I think I heard that God bless you was coined because people said you lose a part of your spirit. If that is the case then I would say maybe superstition.

Saying God bless you goes back to the days of the salem witch hearings. It was thought that the reasion you snezzed in the 1st place as because you had be "bewitched"or a witch was trying to 'bewitch" you. People would then Bless you so that your heart would not stop beating. Crazy but true we had not yet fully understood what a sneez was but people did understand that it made your heart stop for a moment.

The way I always understood it was that when people sneezed their heart either skips a beat or stops momentarily and so people would bless you in case your heard did not return to beating again. I, personally try to make it a point to say "God bless you" rather than "bless you" because, after all, it is God that does the blessing, not us.

:emot-hug:

I looked it up no need to start another thread.. :P

I like the explanation in the second part of the wikipedia thing..

the expression seems to be from a game kids play and if touching wood they were "safe"..

That is kind of how I always looked at it..

just a silly little thing people do ...

like "throwing salt over your shoulder?"

uh oh.. :)

I don't think anyone really believe it is some magic action... :b:

Great point Danny my boy!

When I read it I realized the same thing as you, and I don't always say God bless you, sometimes I just say bless you, and it would be so much better if I say God Bless You insteadbecause like you said he is the one that blesses us. Anyway thanks for bringing that up, :) showed me something else I need to improve on.
