Do you have to try to obey the things Jesus said for his followers to do to be considered a follower of Christ?

Obeying Christ is a sure sign that you belong to him.

Obedience flows out of love. If you love Him, you'll obey Him. (John 14:15)

Tess is right, love is the nature of God and the Spirit that He gives us. Love fulfills all things. It is considerate and sacrificial. It seeks the well being of others. Our new nature in Christ does not want to please itself but God. Our old nature only wants to fulfill it's lusts.

Clearly an unequivocal "YES".

I. John 3

"23": And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

"24": And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Peace.

Obedience is of the utmost importance to be a follower of Christ. Otherwise, why would He have said these things.

He who has my commandments and keeps them, He is is who loves me. And He who loves me will be loved by my Father. And I will love him and disclose Myself to him

Yes :wub: God only wants the best for us, he died to pay for our sins and the teachings he left behind were our guidelines and rules which we keep out of love for the Lord, and out of thankfulness for what he did for us. the teachings and the examples he showed us about how to live a proper life. a life worthy of what he did and who he is.
