Guest LadyC
well i think that's what i'm gonna buy then. one question... since the other has 18x optical zoom and this one has 10x, can anyone give me an idea how far of a distance that is? when we have family camp during the summer, i love to get photos of the deer up there, but they don't always come stand five feet in front and smile pretty for their portrait, know what i mean? Yep, I know what you mean. As for 'apparent' distance, that is simple: One is 10x closer while the other is 18x closer. Canon's are known for image clarity, therefore a 10x camera at 8MP set to high resolution should offer you enough to work with and then some. Mine is 3x optical with 3.6x digital zoom. I rarely use the digital zoom, and even 3x has proven sufficient in a general use camera. I happened upon a Cormorant a while back that was sunbathing and with 3x optical at high res I had enough for good quality 5x7's. From what I have seen, optical zoom is superior to digital zoom. Both cameras are good, it depends a lot upon the type of photography you are primarily planning to do. If you are planning to use a tripod and take wilderness/nature/animal shots, I would *perhaps* get the Olympus. If it is intended as an all around camera, I would stay with the Canon myself. These might be of value to you: Canon Review Olympus Review I use this site myself when researching cameras.

I really couldn't tell you how far it is but its significant. My canon is 3x but I have a 18x JVC videocamera and I see the differance big time.
