John 3:16NKJV Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. On the one hand it means "the whole world generally." That is, the earth and all of its inhabitants. On the other hand "the world" is given to refer to the sphere of influence in which sin, Satan, and the agents of darkness operate. The respective contexts of the verses in which the terms are used will let you know which they are referring to.

The other embodies "practices or ways". In His Love, Suzanne
Guest yod
I think in most cases He was referring to the greek spirit of the western world which was a relatively new occurance at the time. It was "civilization" competing against the ancient paradigm of a nation ruled by God's laws. This idea of man governing man and being the center of all intellectual knowledge took over the church in the 2nd century and still grips us today. the "world" has assumed control in most congregations....
