Royal college warns abortions can lead to mental illnessSarah-Kate Templeton, Health Editor

Women may be at risk of mental health breakdowns if they have abortions, a medical royal college has warned. The Royal College of Psychiatrists says women should not be allowed to have an abortion until they are counselled on the possible risk to their mental health.

This overturns the consensus that has stood for decades that the risk to mental health of continuing with an unwanted pregnancy outweighs the risks of living with the possible regrets of having an abortion.

MPs will shortly vote on a proposal to reduce the upper time limit for abortions

The controversy intensified earlier this year when an inquest in Cornwall heard that a talented artist hanged herself because she was overcome with grief after aborting her twins. Emma Beck, 30, left a note saying: “Living is hell for me. I should never have had an abortion. I see now I would have been a good mum. I want to be with my babies; they need me, no one else does.”

That is a very sad and tragic story.

Trouble is, in my opinion, abortion is so readily available and accepted in this country, that it has become a kind of 'safety net' for so many young girls who want to sleep around.....as they see it as a way out of their predicament if and when they get pregnant.

I'm not surprised that abortion causes psychiatric problems later in life for a lot of these girls who aborted their children when they themselves were still young..........I would think that they only really reflect on it later in life.

My personal belief is that abortion is murder.

Actually I would be willing to bet that the illiness is a bit like post traumatic stress syndrome. When you take the life of another person it can a long lasting effect on the human Psyche.

When I was working in the casinos I was shocked and horrified by how many were having abortions, one of the cocktail waitress had, had 5 and they spoke of it all so casually... We were working in the lounge at the Statosphere tower, it is very close working quarters for staff, anything said is heard in the lounge by customers... And these young women were talking loud and proud about their abortions in detail.... It ached my very soul, it made me sick. I don't understand why it did not appear to have any effect on them.

There another woman there as well, she was a year younger than myself and new to Vegas. She got herself in a bad situation and had an abortion, she was also shocked by their conversation, because she felt remorse... She also fell into a serious bout of depression that led to alcoholism and several other bad choices, that eventualy led me to call her family from out of state to come and get her before she killed herself.

Sad :emot-crying:

A girl I knew in high school went through a terrible depression after she had an abortion and had to be hospitalized because of it.

You know that planned parenthood will be all over this - they don't want the reality of the emotional consequences being discussed because then it will affect them financially and that is the sick, sad truth!

Not only that, but, they perform abortions on girls who've been raped when in fact they are supposed to turn them over to the authorities. They do not care about these girls and their well-being one bit - they are an absolute farce!

IMO: It is sad that it has taken this long for such a warning to come forth. For these things have been readily seen for years upon years.

It is an incredibly hard thing to deal with for years afterward for many. For some, they become so calloused that it is as nothing. It is indeed a very sad affair.

I did a debate on abortion and found that 10% of all women who have them have severe psychological repercussions and/or have to go on medication for mental reasons. It's staggering.

These are the ones who may have been pressured into getting one. Like the gay marriage advocates, the pro-choice movement has alot of influence and have affected/infected enough people that this 10% may very well have been pressured or tricked into their abortions despite their better judgment. I believe those women who have miscarriages also suffer similar occurances of the same mental anguish.
