I personally find the slaughtering of innocent people and defenseless children repugnant, but present your case. Amalek attacks first.....Exodus17:8 ACC. In the most treacherous and dastardly manner, for they came at the rear of the camp, smote the hindmost of the people, even all that were feeble behind, when they were faint and weary, Deuteronomy 25:18. The baggage no doubt was the object of their avarice, but finding women, children, and aged and infirm, they smote them and took the spoils. To explain it to a young believer confused by the text is noble, but to defend it to a nonbeliever would be the height of folly. Still AnitaRose and HunterPoet did quite well

He was a "mighty warrior" who persecuted his cousins, the Israelites. YHWH specifically gave that command to Saul for a reason--like someone else pointed out, Amalek tried to destroy the Israelites as they were passing through their country to get to the Promised Land. 400 years after 1 Samuel 15:3, another Amalekite tried to destroy the Israelites. His name was Haman (booo!). He was a grandson of Agag, the Amalekite that Saul refused to kill, and Samuel did. Thanks to Esther, the Persian Jewish population at the time was saved, and Haman (booo!) and his sons were killed. There is a spirit of Amalek abounding today. Hitler was possessed with it, so was Stalin, and now Ahmadinejad (or however you spell his name) has it. You might rename the latter Haman (booo!). But still, YHWH's people will triumph. a. I love the story of Esther. I never made the connection between Haman and Amalekites though. Very interesting, anitarose.

You have no moral compass. Killing defenseless children is wrong and worthy of an explanation.

The only options were to kill the children / newborns, or leave them to starve a slow death in the desert.
