I was looking at the issue of head coverings in 1 Corinthians and came up with an idea as to why Paul says men should not cover their heads in church.

It's so our heads won't overheat and we go bald. Duh! :emot-highfive:

I think it is important to point out that this advice was given to address a particular need for the Corinthians and was not being offered as universal church doctrine.

The epistles contain doctrine, but they also contain instructions relevant to the specific congregation or person to whom they are written.

We have the luxury of reading them all and they are universally available to us, but that was not the case in the when Paul was writing.

The issue of long hair and headcoverings pertained to Corinth mainly because of the pagan priestesses and homosexual male prostitutes who were getting saved and coming in to the congregation and the adjustments they had to make as a result.

The restriction of men wearing a headcovering was significant due to the fact that male prostitutes wore feminine headcoverings to attract men. The priestesses that operated at the Oracle of Delphi located in that area shaved their heads. These concerns had to be addressed and Paul attempts to do that in this letter.

Ok, but I am still stuggling with this scripture...

1Co 11:10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels

Any ideas?

What precisely is the question? I am not seeing what the problem is there.

Shiloh, what does covering our heads have to do with angels? What will happen to them or what will they do to us if we dont?

I am asking, because I am not sure what Paul alludes to when he says "because of the angels". I am not saying I have a problem, just that I am not sure what he means by the statement.

If you carefully read verses 1 thru 16, you'll see something that not very many people catch.

We have to be careful we don't get into legalism with the Scriptures that were mentioned. They seen to be contradicting what our Savior said about man looking on the outward appearance, but that He looks at the heart. In fact, there's more verses pertaining to heart issues than the length of hair of men, women and head coverings.

We can always ask our Poppa what those particular verses mean, and if we're being disobedient in some way.

1 Corinthians 11

1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.

3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.

5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.

6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.

8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man.

9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord.

12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.

13 Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.

16 But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

Well I have read, and maybe because I am tired after a long day still don't get the angel thing.

Barnes waffles on about evil angels or maybe good angels, and can't seem to make up his mind either. So when I have had time to rest awhile, i will have another stab at it. Until then, Blessings from dazed and confused :whistling:

I have a thorough thread on this I did years ago here back in 2003 called "For this cause ought the woman . . ., have power on her head."

It is easier to direct you there instead of cut and pasting it here .
