A Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota criticized Tuesday's Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act by calling Justice Clarence Thomas "Uncle Thomas," then saying he didn't know "Uncle Tom" was a racist epithet.

Uncle Tom was a heroic and noble character who GAVE HIS OWN LIFE that others might go free. I HATE the idiocy of using Uncle Tom as an insult.

If this guy didn't know that 'Uncle Tom' is a racial slur he's obviously too stupid to hold office.  I agree with Allen West; if Paula Deen was fired for her remarks, he should be too.  His explanation and 'apology' made him sound even worse than his comment.

True, Leonard but, to black Americans, it's an insult.

I have  never understood how the great self-sacrifice of Uncle Tom (the writer of the book avered that EVERY part of the book was true, although she changed names of people and places involved) could become an insult to anyone who had ever read the book.

I HATE IGNORANCE!

Agreed on both parts.

So do I, Leonard. But, since that term is considered insulting, why use it?  I was called 'Casper' by a black person a long time ago.  Casper is a cute little cartoon character but that's not what that woman meant when she called me that.  It was meant as an insult and I took it as one.
