Old Testament Sacrifices

I am currently study the Book of Leviticus.  The intro to my commentary (J. Vernon McGhee) stated that some very important foundational truths can be found in Leviticus that cast light on the whole rest of the Bible.

I am having trouble getting through the system of sacrifices.  I understand that each sacrifice represents a different aspect of Christ and what He did for us.  At the same time they also reflect what we can lay down before God that will be a pleasing aroma to Him.  Somehow I just can't sort it all out.

Let's see, there are:

Sin offerings

Burnt offerings

Grain offerings

Peace offerings

Trespass offerings

Heave and wave offerings

Some are burnt, some are boiled and then burnt, some the priests partake of, others are totally consumed by fire.  Some are brought into the Holy Place, some are brought outside the camp........

Has anyone sorted them out and got understanding of the revelation hidden in these?

I am just sure that a sound understanding of the system of sacrifice is a huge key to understanding what and why Christ did what He did for us.

the is a FANTASTIC commentary by Louis Goldberg that explains this very well. He was a messianic believer who was over the translation of the Old Testament for the NIV and a professor at Moody Bible for a while (I think?)

It's much more detailed than I can get into on this list without getting writers cramp

But all offerings are freewill....

sin offering = comes first before any other offering will be acceptable

burnt offerings = our whole heart

grain offerings = our works

peace offerings = between brothers in the sight of G-d

there is a LOT more but I gotta take my daughter to see the Jungle Book at this very moment...bye!

Thank you so much, yod, for the tip.  I'll check into Louis Goldberg.  I'm amazed at how much foundational material is in the Book of Leviticus!!!!!!!!

Am excited to get revelation about the meaings of the sacrifices.  It's pretty important.
