After verse two is when the waters separated and then land formed from the lower. Thus took form and no longer void, yet lifeless waste. The waters above in only mentioned once in the whole Bible. What ever that is earth came from it. Seems you are still missing the point. v.2 should have been translated "BUT the earth BECAME an UNINHABITABLE WASTELAND".
