Deadly quake had power of N-bomb

By Richard Macey

May 21, 2005

The Boxing Day earthquake that sent a tsunami sweeping across the Indian Ocean, killing more than 283,000 people, released as much power as a 100-gigaton nuclear bomb and triggered other quakes as far away as Alaska.

The energy released by the initial quake was as much as is used in the US in six months, said Roger Bilham, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado, in one of a series of reports on the disaster published yesterday in the journal Science.

Professor Bilham said the 100-gigaton quake (equal to 100 billion tonnes of TNT) shifted more than 30 cubic kilometres of sea water, starting the wave that reached the east and west coasts of the Americas, as well as the Arctic Ocean.

Lifting of the Indian Ocean floor reduced the capacity of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea enough to raise world sea levels by about a tenth of a millimetre.

Three other scientists blamed the Sumatra quake for sparking a series of jolts an hour later around Mount Wrangell, an Alaskan volcano, almost half a world away.

Surface shock waves radiating out from Sumatra "triggered an 11-minute swarm of 14 local earthquakes near Mount Wrangell", wrote the University of Alaska researchers.

In his report, Professor Bilham warned that Indonesia may be shaken again as a result of forces set in motion on December 26. The Nias quake, on March 28, confirmed a 300-kilometre section of the tectonic plate boundary under the sea off Sumatra had been pushed "to the point of failure".

"The three-month delay between the two earthquakes has awakened fears that a domino-like failure of the already highly stressed plate boundary to the south and east may follow," he said.

Other scientists found that the Boxing Day quake started with a 100-kilometre section of the tectonic plate rupturing at a relatively low speed.

Professor Bilham believed the most remarkable feature was the way the quake ended. "At its northern end, the surface between the Indian plate and the Andaman archipelago took more than half an hour to slide a distance of seven to 20 metres. It was this slow slip that trippled the quake's energy release" from magnitude 9 "to a gigantic" 9.3.

Commentators are calling it the greatest tsunami disaster in human history.

The Bible gives it even greater significance.

After a "tribulation" that would nearly wipe out the Jewish people, Jesus said there would be unusual events in the heavens and troublesome waves on earth -- as part of the sign that his Second Coming was near.

Human history never saw the like of modern space probes or the recent deadly waves.

A comparison of the accounts by Matthew and Luke shows that it would happen "after" the great tribulation:

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken." (Matt. 24:29 KJV) "signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars, and upon earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves" - Luke 21:25

The parallel accounts explain what Great Tribulation Jesus was speaking of:

"For then shall be great tribulation" - Matt. 24:21 - "great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people...led away captive into all nations" - Luke 21:23-24 KJV

These parallel passages show Jesus referred to a centuries-long Tribulation on the Jewish people.

Jesus told the inhabitants of Judea to flee to the mountains when they saw 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel (Matt. 24:15-16; Mark 13:14), which the parallel verse in Luke's account reveals to be when they saw "Jerusalem surrounded by armies" (armies of the Roman Empire). Luke 21:20

Jesus added, "and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled." (Luke 21:24 KJV) The Tribulation would continue a VERY LONG TIME from 70 A.D., and would climax in the Holocaust. It would end when the "times of the Gentiles" would end, and Israel would be restored to the Promised Land and regain control over Jerusalem.

Jesus said, "except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved." (Matt. 24:22 KJV) A million Jews were killed by the Roman Empire, and then six million by the Third Reich.

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken." (Matt. 24:29 KJV) After the Tribulation's climax in the Holocaust of 1941-1945, the heavens lost their power as men began to rocket into space. The heavenly bodies figuratively fell from the sky, as they came within mankind's reach.

With satellites circling overhead, Mars rovers exploring the Red planet, and an international space station, we have been seeing the foretold "signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars" for some time now. And the recent tsunami disaster brought "distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves" to complete the picture.

"Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near," Jesus added. - Luke 21:28

Well...you might not agree with this interpretation, but it makes you think...

Lets WATCH and PRAY

This interpretation of Bible prophecy is what happens when someone takes everything figuratively in the Bible.

In the Books of Daniel and Revelation, we are told that the GREAT TRIBULATION will last seven years, and that a single man, known as the antichrist, will rule the world and force everyone to worship him and take his mark. We are told that the Lord will come back after HALF the city of Jerusalem falls, and that BABYLON, which does not even exist as a viable city right now, will be destroyed. Babylon still thrived for decades after the destruction of Jerusalem. So this above interpretation of scripture is so off base that it beggars description.

The December quake is NOTHING compared to the two major earthquakes recorded in the prophetic calendar in the book of Revelation. The last one in the Book of Revelation will be so bad that EVERY mountain will be flattened and EVERY island sank. That is literally hundreds, perhaps thousands or even millions of times stronger than the sumatra 9.3 quake. This quake has nothing to do with bible prophecy except that it fulfills the general statement that there will be "Earthquakes in diverse places" and "The wind and waves raging" it does not fulfill any other specific prophetic text from the Bible.

But hold on to your Bibles, and your loved ones, because there is coming something worse than what has happened. Unless we all repent, God is about to pour out his wrath like never before, and like will never be seen again untill that coming 7 year period again. There is about to be the judgment of God poured out on this nation and the world. Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and we have all been so complacent in our lives. Treating God like our buddy or something, when he is the Almighty creator who gave  his life for us. The tribulation has not even remotely begun yet.

Pray for mercy and for strength form the Lord Jesus to get through this thing.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
