Omegaman has posted a list of Scriptures for and against that is very good. I concluded that the weak, overscrulous, and fearful need to be reassured that God keeps us. However those who are unrepentant, who are presumptuous and think that they can keep on sinning and God will still save them, the backslidden and those who take their salvation for granted need to hear that God will not always strive with man and they are in danger of falling. Also, the self righteous need to learn they have fallen away from grace. However, those who are walking in the Spirit and bearing fruit are assured that God is keeping them to the end. The parable of the sower in Luke 8 speaks of some who hear the word but satan snatches it away from them before they can believe and be saved. It speaks of others who hear the word with gladness but when trials come they fall away. They were not rooted deep in God's word or their faith was not genuine and their commitment was not unconditional. It also speaks of some whose faith doesn't ripen because it is choked out by the cares and busyness of this world. This is a warning to keep our priorities straight and love God with all our hearts, souls strength and might. He needs to be first and central to our lives. 1

Elsewhere on this forum a battle rages over this. Some have answered wisely, and some just from second-hand ideas. What the story really is will only be answered when we reach the end of our lives. I trust that we all choose correctly because it seems a rhetorical question really that can only be proven by the Lord Himself.
