They don't bother me and just run off. I have gone out at night and there were several hanging around. They tend to be shy. It is possible that they would attack a very small child or a dog. Here they are accustomed to people. There are neighborhoods in Los Angeles where the news warns people that the coyotes are attacking pets and even are threatening people. One man with his dog was being encircled by a few coyotes....the man managed to run back into his house. My friend's teen daughter was stalked by a coyote as she walked her dog. The girl could hear the padding of the coyote's footsteps as she tried to get back to her home. Thank God, suddenly, on the empty street at night...a man suddenly appeared and scared the coyote off. In our huge Griffith Park, a wilderness area, a coyote came out where a family was picnicking, and started to drag their child away! It is very unusual. We had a virus going through skunks here some years ago and we were shooting them and sending to the university to see if they were rabid. It was always just a virus.
