I'd have to say, been there, done that. I wasn't into what is called 'hard rock', I listened to the likes of ABBA. Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Dolly Pardon, Juice Newton, Patsy Cline, etc. I don't ever recall listing to any of this type of music, that brought any tears to my eyes?

I suppose it's how you're raised maybe and what you grew up with. I grew up with, even as today in my church, with traditional old time hymn's. I won't say there's anything wrong with modern Christian music; with guitar's, drums and symbol's in church music. I've asked myself, I wonder what kind's and types of "worship music" the Lord likes and approves of? I've discovered many of the Psalm's were musical and used as such. Are there any drum beats used? We have a very good idea of what instruments were used in worship music, in fact, in places in the Bible we're encouraged to shout, praise and sing loud.

Anyway, I might say I'm a traditionalist and much prefer hymn's. I mentioned above that no secular music has ever produced a tear for a reason.

Shortly after I repented in November, 2016, I vowed to myself that I would give my Lord preeminence in my life forevermore, and started attending church when ever the doors were opened. I need to mention here I've never been the emotional type, prone to breaking out in tears, except when losing a loved one. I spent twenty years in the military and took 'pride' in hardening my emotions and my heart.

I don't remember if it was the second or third Sunday I attended morning church worship [in over four decades]. I think it was the second hymn we sang, "It's Well With My Soul". All of a sudden, I couldn't control myself. With everything I had in me, I tried my best to control my emotions but; tears and snot came flying out all over my glasses and face and I couldn't even see. There were not any Kleenex around and I'm trying to hide / cover up what is going on. Who is this person that has lost all control? I was embarrassed, how many people are looking at this wimp. I dare not look around!

What a powerful hymn and testament to break me like a twig. I wanted to know more and why? I wrote down the author's name and researched him and the story of how this hymn came into being. Again [but this time in privacy] it touched me, and again the tears flowed reading the account. To say it was inspirational would be an understatement. Other traditional hymn's have had the same affect, maybe to lessor degrees than the one I mentioned. I can't say modern Christian worship music moves me like the traditional hymn's do.

I'm so grateful the Lord saved a wretched man like me, and changed my stone cold heart back to a heart of flesh.

@rhomphaeam

FYI:   There's a separate section in the forum for video links.  They all need to be manually approved by moderators. This is simply forum policy that all videos must be approved and aggregated together in the appropriate section.  Once there, they can be linked to in a thread like this one.

"So what kind of music do you like?"

"Oh we like both kinds. Country and Western".

I have a few more videos I plan to post there.

This is an audio only link. Interesting the different ways the same song can be played. This is how I play " It Is Well With My Soul". I have downloads unlocked for anyone who might want it.

Please be reminded about the rules for videos.

Its my understanding that the rule was created so that Mods have a chance to preview all videos before they are approved and accessed. So, they are assigned to one specific area--otherwise, it would be near impossible to prevent members from being exposed to potentially bad stuff. After a video is approved, a link can be made to its location in a thread like this.

If you wish--I could move this thread to the video area that is appropriate. That would mean skipping a step in this process.

That would be great thanks. I did wonder if the rule may have been a need to review content for the reasons you state. I just couldn't see how to link the article link with the site - still not sure how to do that. But the content is good in the article because it gives hope and more than likely a balance to taking anything too far when reading these strong posts (my own) and their gravity.

Done!

After @Alive kindly preserved my other comment I wanted to explain something that gave rise to my piece Music & It's Power.

But before that, in keeping with posting the article about Tony Anderson of YES and his brother Jon Anderson, I once applied to join the US Marine Corp, and the somewhat stern sergeant asked me why on earth a British lad wanted to join the Marine Corp. So I told him.

"Well" I said

"Because I love Elvis!"

Needless to say I didn't get in.

As to the more serious matter regarding music.

Two events gave me reason to deeply see just how important music really is. Not just music of course but the words we attach to music.

In 1987 I was with a group of street evangelists. We all took street evangelism very seriously and music never came into our work. But we did pray and worship before taking the ground for Christ. One of these pre outreach times of prayer and worship came to an astonishing climax. And to this day I still cannot fully understand what happened or how it happened.

As we were singing a praise song I realised that a few of the other 32 men and women were beginning to sing in an unknown tongue. There singing had such a character that I was caught up in the Spirit and found myself singing in a tongue also. And not just myself but every man and women came into that same effect. In the end all of us were singing in the same tongue and the quality of the sound was simply breathtaking. It was as if we were caught up into a wave of eternal life.

That outreach time was also exceptional. Towards the end of our allotted slot in the city centre we began sharing our testimonies and within a half hour period the usually small arc of witnesses had grown to over a hundred. Believers were arriving from all corners of the city and just began to share their testimonies. Many spoke most did not speak but the sight of this made me marvel at God. Then a young girl came into view -  I saw her immediately and knew that God was going to do something great. She first stood in front of this arc of believers and then came and took the microphone and shared that she had come into the city to buy alcohol so that she could take her own life with the medication she had in her pocket, which she then waved at the onlookers. Then she gave her life to Christ in full view of all who saw this. The arc then melted away and as quickly as it had formed it was gone.

In 2012 I came across the ministry of a former Marine Corp vet who had served in Vietnam and for six week he became detached from his platoon. He was so badly damaged in his mind that he was eventually discharged from the Marines. In the 1970's he became a born again Christian in the Jesus Movement. I rang him in the States to try and minister into something that he shared which came to my attention. He described one time being taken down into a labyrinth and hearing music that was so exceptional that he could not resist it. He described being drawn along a very dark passage and realising that he was more than likely experiencing something pertaining to Hell. He became more and more nervous as he approached the source of the music. Then he came to its source. I won't describe what he saw as it is unedifying and harmful. When this happened he was already a mature believer and yet he allowed himself to be drawn into an unfathomable effect that in the end nearly destroyed him. H went to be with the Lord a few years later - yet he died believing that he was one of the two witnesses of Revelation.

Music is truly an astonishing thing. So it seems to me at least that we ought to always direct it towards God and not allow it to become a fascination that stimulates the flesh and can cause significant harm.

Just in closing.

After being curtly removed from the US Embassy I went and joined the British Army. After ending my guard duty one morning in 1977 my Provost Sergeant who was at least as terrifying as the US Marine Corp sergeant, approached and I thought to myself he sounds unusually cheerful this morning. Then he came, and standing right in my face, he said "I have some good news for you!"

"O" I said, "and what is that Provost?"

He smiled grimly, "Elvis is dead!"

 .

Thank you for sharing these most interesting stories. God truly works in mysterious ways sometimes. Maybe more often than I realize. You seem to have been involved in some exciting times spiritually.

Only recently have I began to analyze music from a more spiritual perspective. I always thought about the effects it had determined to cater it to a feeling or idea I wanted to get from it. And here is where the will comes into play because men can do that and we often do things with music that God doesn't approve of. I had written a lot of music with hidden meanings or Christian themes without it being overtly Christian. Might have been more of a journey I was taking at the time and it was my sort of a musical diary, though I didn't realize it at the time. Some of it was experimentation. I am always looking at what I can do with technology in music.

Sometimes instrumental has more of an impact than music with words for me. Other times I wanted to say more of a message, but had difficulty and sometimes worked with others. The later I would get a small message to add to the music. Early on I made music with a deep poetic slant. Think a mellower version of Rush. I didn't record any of that music. I remember long hours in my basement with the "band" who all eventually gave up because the demands and distances were too great to keep up with their respective responsibilities. Some of my music is open to conjecture, like the song I wrote that has to do with suicide and souls being bound here temporarily as a result-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/lady-by-the-sea

I wrote one about the " Magi" not knowing fully what it mean't. I had determined to write one about the wise men who visited Jesus. This is instrumental so I guess it doesn't matter.

https://soundcloud.com/starise/celtic-starise-magi-eli

I wrote one about the Biblical idea of love personified as a woman named Charity.

https://soundcloud.com/starise/when-charity-smiles

I tried to convey a Christian message in an Irish song here-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/an-irish-blessing-collaboration-with-larry-hansen-da-blu-room

https://soundcloud.com/starise/loddie-de-die

I did lots of collaborations. One with a Norwegian woman. She wrote the words to it and sang. I added some harmony-

https://soundcloud.com/achazia/unattended-you-song-by-starise-and-achazia

Others include a piece with a well known pianist from Greece Fivos Valachis-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/upside-down-fivos-valachis-celtic-starise-collaboration

Plenty more I won't mention here.

Also did LOTS of instrumentals.

Some relaxing-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/the-brief-stay

Some more lively-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/far-gale-composition-by-starise

Some experimental-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/celtic-instrumental-ride-on-the-wind

Acoustic-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/scenes-of-granduer

https://soundcloud.com/starise/celtic-starise-red-sunday

Orchestral-

https://soundcloud.com/starise/thy-kingdom-come

Jazz anyone?

https://soundcloud.com/starise/kick-off-yer-shoes

And chances are none of this sounds like anything heard in church.
