I gotta tell you, though...if you're watching The Patriot, and then getting after your son for watching CSI because it's violent, he probably thinks it's a double-standard. I'm not trying to pick on you for that...I just know because it's not that long ago that I thought the same sort of thing *grin*

Thanks for the insight! I'll keep it in mind as I try to explain why I think they are different.

It doesn't bother me personally. It is part of the show and the job that these characters are doing.

I do agree that shows like this have an anesthetising effect on young people, so I would not in a million years recommend or even suggest that these shows are okay for kids. My kids leave the room when CSI comes on. I won't let hem watch it.

Ovedya, are your kids very young? I would say "no way" for very young kids too, but my son is 14. Do you think it's okay for a 14 year old boy?

I love watching CSI.

One very brief (and not always graphic) moment in an autopsy room is not the gist of the show. The investigative procedures used to solve the crime are what makes it so interesting. I used to watch the old shows like Quincy, Colombo too....anything involving medical things, forensics and mystery solving intrigues me.

Other peoples lives are in my hands daily. I have to handle their bodies when they die as well. Being a believer who enjoys watching this show does not make me one who does not appreciate human life.

My children are 13, 9, and 3. I think what is okay for a 14-year-old boy really depends on the boy. Age doesn't necessarily equate "maturity" in the sense that some kids are more emotionally mature than others. It also depends on how you want to raise him.

I have all girls so I can't say what is "age appropriate" for boys of that age. I do know that there are some PG-13 rated movies that my daughter is absolutely forbidden to see. Heck, some of those I don't even want to see. I think that rating system is contrived anyway. It's been my experience that many movies which are rated PG should really be PG-13, and some movies rated PG-13 should have an R rating. The same thing holds for how television shows are rated. I think CSI actually has a NC-14 rating, or something.

In any case, there are some resources out there that can help you determine what is age appropriate for your kids. One website actually offers movie reviews and grades them based on a number of factors such as sexual content, drug references, violence, etc. The URL is: http://movies.go.com/parentpreviews/ This used to be a site called "Grading the movies." The founder of this website, Rod Gustafson also writes a column for the Parents Television Council Publications: http://www.parentstv.org/ptc/publications/rgcolumns/main.asp

I've watched it a few times and I remember it was VERY graphic. Not only that, the plots were very debased. Very deviant sexual behaviors are exhibited and it is despicable, IMO.

I remember one night after watching it with my wife I looked over to her and said "no more CSI. It grieves me to watch it." My wife instantly agreed with me and we have never watched it since.

Just to clarify... I don't think "graphic" is the problem.

For example... I watch very graphic "reality shows" on Discovery Health Channel like "The Critical Hour," "Untold Stories of the ER," and other medical shows. These show VERY graphic and real footage of surgery, trauma, and other medical issues. I do not have any problem with this type of graphic footage. As a matter of fact, I let my 4 year old watch it, too! Some people might say, "that is too graphic for a 4 year old." I don't thnk so. As a matter of fact, I think it is GOOD for my 4 year old. The next time he is in a situation where someone gets a serious injury and blood is everywhere my 4 year old will be the most "calm, cool, and collect" child around because this won't be new to him. He will have seen it before and will not be shocked and struck with terror. My wife says he's going to grow up to be a doctor

Anyways, back to the subject. The graphic footage on CSI is of MURDERS and other violent crime. It is presented in a morbid and dark way and that is what the problem is. I remember the last episode I saw was where a mother and son (now in his 30s) were having a life-long sexual relationship and now he was in a mental institute and blah blah blah. That's not the kind of stuff we need to put into our minds.

So, it is more the plot and the presentation of CSI that is the problem, not the issue of "graphic" only.

EDITED to add this:

Another plot I remember on CSI was of a girl dying at a "swingers" party. For those who don't know what "swingers" are.. it is where a husband and wife couple go to a party of other husband and wife couples and everyone "switches partners" for the night.

Again, the most disturbing thing about CSI is not the footage of death and injury...rather, it is the plot that surrounds the murders/deaths.

If you want to see real graphic medical television start watching the Discovery Health Channel. It is REAL, not scripted acting, and it does not have the detestable debauchery thrown into the mix.

I don't mean to offend anyone here, I just feel very strongly about this.

Psa 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

The plots in CSI are indeed wicked.

I'm hooked.

I started with CSI Miami, then I moved to CSI Las Vegas.

I watch either when I can remember that they're on.

Speaking as a Christian, I don't mind the graphic scenes at all. There is not too much overt violence or sexuality in the show, nor is there a lot of graphic language.  The higher television rating is just for the autoposey scenes and the crime scene depictions, etc.

This show and "House" are about as regular as I get as far as television viewing is concerned.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Is House pretty good? I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I've only watched "House" one time and it lasted for 3 minutes. The opening scene was a pair of high school kids in bed "getting it on." That was all it took for me to say "never again" to House.

I don't agree with that. I think it's a matter of maturity, and whether you would allow yourself to become changed. The difference is between Lot and Abraham.

Correct... and Lot's first error was "pitching his tent toward Sodom." He must have thought that was a seemingly harmless thing at the time that he did it. God knew where it would ultimately lead.

Gen 13:12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

Gen 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
