Shabbat shalom, everyone.

What is a Mashiyach? What does the title entail? Who was qualified to be a mashiyach? What did they do?

The Hebrew word (Strong's H:4899) is a masculine, singular noun and is found in the Tanakh (the OT), 39 times. The word is found in ...

Leviticus 4:3, 5, 16; 6:22;
1 Samuel 2:10, 35; 12:3, 5; 16:6; 24:6 (twice), 10; 26:9, 11, 16, 23;
2 Samuel 1:14, 16, 21; 19:21; 22:51; 23:1;
1 Chronicles 16:22;
2 Chronicles 6:42;
Psalms 2:2; 18:50; 20:6; 28:8; 84:9; 89:38, 51; 105:15; 132:10, 17;
Isaiah 45:1;
Lamentations 4:20;
Daniel 9:25, 26; and
Habakkuk 3:13.

We should go through each of these passages and look for the answers to these questions:

Leviticus 4:1-21 (KJV)

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying,

"'If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them: 3 If the priest that is anointed (Hebrew: הַכֹּהֵ֧ן הַמָּשִׁ֛יחַ hakoheen hammaashiyach = "the-priest the-anointed-one") do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering. 4 And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock's head, and kill the bullock before the LORD. 5 And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation: 6 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary. 7 And the priest shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in the tabernacle of the congregation; and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 8 And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullock for the sin offering; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, 9 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away, 10 As it was taken off from the bullock of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall burn them upon the altar of the burnt offering. 11 And the skin of the bullock, and all his flesh, with his head, and with his legs, and his inwards, and his dung, 12 Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt.

13 "'And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty; 14 When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin, and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation. 15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD: and the bullock shall be killed before the LORD. 16 And the priest that is anointed shall bring of the bullock's blood to the tabernacle of the congregation: 17 And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the vail. 18 And he shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar which is before the LORD, that is in the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 19 And he shall take all his fat from him, and burn it upon the altar. 20 And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a sin offering, so shall he do with this: and the priest shall make an atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them. 21 And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a sin offering for the congregation.'"

Now, when was a priest anointed? And, with what was he anointed? And, what does it mean to "be anointed?" To find this out, one must go back a little farther:

There's another noun that is feminine singular, מִשְׁחָה, that translates to the "anointing" (H:4888) that is more a noun identifying the PROCESS rather than the PERSON. And, there is the verb form מָשַׁח "to anoint" (H:4886) that is the ACTION of "anointing" something or someone.

The actual oil used for anointing is found in ...

Exodus 30:22-33 (KJV)

22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

23 "Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: 25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. 26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, 27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, 28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. 29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. 31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying,

"'This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. 32 Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you. 33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.'"

That's enough for this entry.

Shalom, again, everyone.

Okay. Now, let's look at the verb form: "maashakh" "מָשַׁח" (Strong's H:4886):

4886 maashakh (mashach) מָשַׁח (maw-shakh').  A primitive root; to rub with oil, i.e. To anoint; by implication, to consecrate; also to paint:
-- anoint, paint.

So, the word implies RUBBING, not just POURING! MASSAGING the special oil into a person's hair and skin, much as we do with a shampoo or a cream rinse in the hair or a lotion applied to the skin! As the word "massaging" can also imply, the action of "choosing" or "selecting" a person and letting everyone know that the person was so chosen and selected is also bound into this word, much as a person might be "massaged" into service today as the next appointed official.

This word is found 69 times in the Tanakh (the Old Testament). The locations are ...

Genesis 31:13;
Exodus 28:41; 29:2, 7, 16; 30:26, 30; 40:9, 10, 11, 13, 15 (twice);
Leviticus 2:4; 6:20; 7:12, 36; 8:10, 11, 12; 16:3, 32;
Numbers 3:3; 6:15; 7:1 (twice), 10, 84, 88; 35:25;
Judges 9:8, 15;
1 Samuel 9:36; 10:1; 15:7, 17; 16:12, 13;
2 Samuel 2:4, 7; 3:39; 5:3, 17; 12:7; 19:10;
1 Kings 1:34, 39, 45; 5:1; 19:15, 16 (twice);
2 Kings 9:3, 6, 12; 11:12; 23:30;
1 Chronicles 11:3; 14:8; 29:22;
2 Chronicles 22:7; 23:11;
Psalm 45:7; 89:20;
Isaiah 21:5; 61:1;
Jeremiah 22:14;
Daniel 9:24; and
Amos 6:6.

We should also look at the word that means "an anointing" as a process or "an anointed thing" having undergone the process, which is also a noun, the Hebrew word "mishkhaah" "מִשְׁחָה" or "maashkhaah" "מָשְׁחָ֣ה " (Strong's H:4888):

4888 mishkhaah (mishkah) מִשְׁחָה (meesh-khaw'). Or maashkhaah (moshchah) {mosh-khaw'}; from mashach; unction (the act); by implication, a consecratory gift:
-- (to be) anointed(-ing), ointment.

This word is found 26 times in the Tanakh (the Old Testament), all in the Torah (the Pentateuch):

Exodus 25:6; 29:7, 21, 29; 30:25 (twice), 31; 31:11; 35:8, 15, 28; 37:29; 39:38; 40:9, 15;
Leviticus 7:35 (twice); 8:2, 10, 12, 30; 10:7; 21:10, 12;
Numberse 4:16; and 18:8.

To truly understand the process, one should look up these verses and see what was actually happening to these people.

One last word that is related to these is the Aramaic word "mshakh" מְשַׁח, which was used for the "oil" actually used for anointing a thing or an individual.

4887 mshakh (meshach) מְשַׁח (meh-shakh'). (Aramaic) from a root corresponding to mashach; oil:
-- oil.

This word is only found twice, in Ezra 6:9 and Ezra 7:22.

That's the background for what we need to understand about this word "maashiyach," which was translated into Greek as "christos."

Next: Who were those called a "maashiyach."

Shalom, everyone!

So, where am I going with this? Was Yeeshuwa` ("Jesus") the ONLY "maashiyach?" Was He the ONLY "Messiah?" Was He the ONLY "Christ?"

NO!!!

Exodus 29:1-9 (KJV)

1 "And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest's office: Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish, 2 And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them. 3 And thou shalt put them into one basket, and bring them in the basket, with the bullock and the two rams. 4 And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water. 5 And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aaron the coat, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod: 6 And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head, and put the holy crown upon the mitre. 7 Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him. 8 And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them. 9 And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest's office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron and his sons."

Thus, Aharown ("Aaron") was an "anointed one," a "maashiyach." (Remember: There are NO capital letters in Hebrew.)

Psalm 133:1-3 (KJV)

1 {A Song of degrees of David.}

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

Each of his sons was also an "anointed one," a "maashiyach."

Leviticus 8:30 (KJV)

30 And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

1 Chronicles 6:49-52 (KJV)

49 But Aaron and his sons (Hebrew: uwbaanaayow = "and-his-sons," plural) offered upon the altar of the burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, and were appointed for all the work of the place most holy, and to make an atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded. 50 And these are the sons (Hebrew: bneey = "sons," construct form) of Aaron;
Eleazar his son,
Phinehas his son,
Abishua his son,
51 Bukki his son,
Uzzi his son,
Zerahiah his son,
52 Meraioth his son,
Amariah his son,
Ahitub his son,
53 Zadok his son,
Ahimaaz his son.

This is the list of chief priests who were certainly anointed, but all of the Levites under Aharown were also so anointed:

Numbers 3:1-4 (KJV)

1 These also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai. 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office. 4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the sight of Aaron their father.

1 Chronicles 24:1-19 (KJV)

1 Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron.

The sons of Aaron;

Nadab, and
Abihu,
Eleazar, and
Ithamar.

2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office. 3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service. 4 And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar; and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers. 5 Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar. 6 And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

7 Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib,
the second to Jedaiah,
8 The third to Harim,
the fourth to Seorim,
9 The fifth to Malchijah,
the sixth to Mijamin,
10 The seventh to Hakkoz,
the eighth to Abijah,
11 The ninth to Jeshua,
the tenth to Shecaniah,
12 The eleventh to Eliashib,
the twelfth to Jakim,
13 The thirteenth to Huppah,
the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,
14 The fifteenth to Bilgah,
the sixteenth to Immer,
15 The seventeenth to Hezir,
the eighteenth to Aphses,
16 The nineteenth to Pethahiah,
the twentieth to Jehezekel,
17 The one and twentieth to Jachin,
the two and twentieth to Gamul,
18 The three and twentieth to Delaiah,
the four and twentieth to Maaziah.

19 These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.

All of these, therefore, were so anointed, even though not all of the Levites (the children of Levi) were anointed. Thus, EACH ONE of them was called a "maashiyach."

The kings of the children of Israel, starting with Sha'uwl ("Saul"), were also anointed:

1 Samuel 10:1 (KJV)

1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said,

"Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?"

Later, we read this:

1 Samuel 10:17-27 (KJV)

17 And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh; 18 And said unto the children of Israel,

"Thus saith the LORD God of Israel,

"'I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you: 19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him,

"'"Nay, but set a king over us."'

"Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands."

20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and
Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.

22 Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered,

"Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff."

23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people,

"See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people?"

And all the people shouted, and said,

"God save the king!"

25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. 26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched. 27 But the children of Belial said,

"How shall this man save us?"

And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.

And after Saul had sinned and been rejected as king by the LORD, David was also anointed by Samuel for the LORD:

1 Samuel 16:1-13 (KJV)

1 And the LORD said unto Samuel,

"How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons."

2 And Samuel said,

"How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me!"

And the LORD said,

"Take an heifer with thee, and say, 'I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.' 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee."

4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said,

"Comest thou peaceably?"

5 And he said,

"Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice."

And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said,

"Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him."

7 But the LORD said unto Samuel,

"Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said,

"Neither hath the LORD chosen this."

9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said,

"Neither hath the LORD chosen this."

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse,

"The LORD hath not chosen these."

11 And Samuel said unto Jesse,

"Are here all thy children?"

And he said,

"There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep."

And Samuel said unto Jesse,

"Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither."

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said,

"Arise, anoint him: for this is he."

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.

King Saul was so troubled and paranoid about David, that he chased him everywhere he heard David had gone, and meant to kill him, to keep the kingship for himself and pass it to his son, Jonathan. But, the LORD protected David from King Saul. Yet,even when David had an advantage over King Saul, He WOULDN'T touch the LORD'S anointed!

1 Samuel 24:1- (KJV)

1 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying,

"Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi."

2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. 3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave. 4 And the men of David said unto him,

"Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, 'Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee.'"

Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily. 5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. 6 And he said unto his men,

"The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed (Hebrew: limshiyach YHWH = 'to-a-maashiyach of-YHWH' = 'to-an-anointed-one of-YHWH'), to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD (Hebrew: mshiyach YHWH = a-maashiyach of-YHWH = an-anointed-one of-YHWH")!"

7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying,

"My lord the king!"

And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself. 9 And David said to Saul,

"Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, 'Behold, David seeketh thy hurt'? 10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, 'I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed (Hebrew: kiy-mshiyach YHWH huw' = "for-a-maashiyach of-YHWH he-[is]" = "for-an-anointed-one of-YHWH he-[is]").' 11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. 12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 13 As saith the proverb of the ancients,

"'Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.'

14 "After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. 15 The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand."

Later, we read of two other times that David is anointed:

2 Samuel 2:1-4a (KJV)

1 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying,

"Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?"

And the LORD said unto him,

"Go up."

And David said,

"Whither shall I go up?"

And he said,

"Unto Hebron."

2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite. 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah

2 Samuel 5:1-5 (KJV)

1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying,

"Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, 'Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.'"

3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

Then, we read this about Solomon:

1 Kings 1:28-40 (KJV)

28 Then king David answered and said,

"Call me Bathsheba."

And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king. 29 And the king sware, and said,

"As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress, 30 Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, 'Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead'; even so will I certainly do this day."

31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said,

"Let my lord king David live for ever."

32 And king David said,

"Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada."

And they came before the king. 33 The king also said unto them,

"Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon: 34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, 'God save king Solomon!' 35 Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah."

36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said,

"Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too. 37 As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David."

38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon. 39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said,

"God save king Solomon!"

40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

Next will be the Davidic Covenant!

Shalom, everyone!

If anyone is reading along, I haven't posted since January 19th, but this topic is ESSENTIAL and should be discussed thoroughly.

There are two locations in Scripture that record the Davidic Covenant: 2 Samuel 7 and 1 Chronicles 17:

2 Samuel 7:1-17 (KJV)

1 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; 2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet,

"See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains."

3 And Nathan said to the king,

"Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee."

4 And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying,

5 "Go and tell my servant David,

"'Thus saith the LORD,

"'"Shalt THOU build ME an house for ME to dwell in? 6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, 'Why build ye not me an house of cedar? '"'

8 "Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David,

"'Thus saith the LORD of hosts,

"'"I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: 9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, 11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies."

"'Also the LORD telleth THEE that HE will make THEE an house.

12 "'"And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever."'"

17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

1 Chronicles 17:1-15 (KJV)

1 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet,

"Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains."

2 Then Nathan said unto David,

"Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee."

3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

4 "Go and tell David my servant,

"'Thus saith the LORD,

"'"THOU shalt not build ME an house to dwell in: 5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. 6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, 'Why have ye not built me an house of cedars? '"

7 "Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David,

"'Thus saith the LORD of hosts,

"'"I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel: 8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth. 9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, 10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies."

"'Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build THEE an house.

11 "'"And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. 13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: 14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore."'"

15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Furthermore, this covenant was repeated to Miryam ("Mary") when she was about to conceive the Messiah:

Luke 1:26-38 (KJV)

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said,

"Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women!"

29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her,

"Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

34 Then said Mary unto the angel,

"How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"

35 And the angel answered and said unto her,

"The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible."

38 And Mary said,

"Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."

And the angel departed from her.

This covenant was spoken about in Daniel 9:27:

Daniel 9:20-27 (KJV)

20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said,

"O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.

24 "Seventy weeks (70 x 7 = 490 years) are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city,
(1) to finish the transgression, and
(2) to make an end of sins, and
(3) to make reconciliation for iniquity, and
(4) to bring in everlasting righteousness, and
(5) to seal up the vision and prophecy, and
(6) to anoint the most Holy.

25 "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks (7 x 7 = 49 years), and threescore and two weeks (62 x 7 = 434 years): the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And AFTER threescore and two weeks (62 x 7 = 434 years) shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he (the Messiah) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week (1 x 7 = 7 years): and in the midst of the week (1/2 x 7 = 3.5 years) he (the Messiah) shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he (the Messiah) shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate."

Shalom, everyone.

So, based upon the Davidic Covenant, there is a practical reason for calling a person a "messiah" (an English transliteration of the Hebrew "maashiyach") or a "christ" (an English transliteration of "christos," the Greek translation of the Hebrew "maashiyach"). It means that God has selected that individual as HIS choice for being "king" of Israel! And, thus, the significance of being called "the Son of God" was also revealed.

And, for David, there was a succession of kingship:

First, he was so anointed as a "ruddy lad," "ruddy" meaning "red."
Second, he was anointed king over the tribe of Yhudah or "Judah," making him "king of Judah" or "king of the Jews."
Finally, he was anointed king over the whole nation of the children of Israel, making him "king of Israel."

Daniel says that the ULTIMATE maashiyach, the One God chooses to be king over Israel FOREVER, whom we now know to be Yeeshuwa` or "Jesus" was to strengthen the covenant for 1 Week or 7 years, just as His ancestor David did, but in the middle of the Week (3.5 years), He instead was cut off, and He ended the sacrifice and the oblation by being the ULTIMATE Sacrifice of haKeves Elohiym, "the Lamb of God." This was not to replace His covenanted Kingship or a secondary plan; this was GOD'S Plan all along! To become Israel's Ultimate King, He must first be "Yeeshuwa`," for His name means "He shall save" or "He shall deliver" or "He shall rescue!" And, Matthew records:

Matthew 1:18-25 (KJV)

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise:

When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying,

"Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS (Greek: Ieesous = Hebrew: Yeeshuwa`): for HE SHALL SAVE his people from their sins."

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

He had to die as God's Sacrifice for sin, the Lamb of God or "haKeves Elohiym," in order to accomplish this!

So, for 3.5 years, the time of Yeeshuwa`s "earthly ministry," as some people call His offer of the Kingdom during His First Advent, He showed that He was God's CHOICE - God's "maashiyach" - to be Israel's King. When He was born, we read these words:

Matthew 2:1-6 (KJV)

1 Now when Jesus (Greek: Ieesous, a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name "Yeeshuwa` ") was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying,

"WHERE IS HE THAT IS BORN KING OF THE JEWSfor we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship (to bend the knee to) him."

3 When Herod THE KING had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where CHRIST should be born. 5 And they said unto him,

"In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

6 "'And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.'"

And, after He offered the Kingdom to the Jews, and after they rejected Him, as they were crucifying Him, Pilate wrote this upon his supersription as an "accusation":

Matthew 27:35-36 (KJV)

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over his head his accusation written,

"THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

Mark recorded it this way:

Mark 15:26 (KJV)

26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over,

"THE KING OF THE JEWS."

Luke recorded it as:

Luke 23:38 (KJV)

38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew,

"THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

Finally, in John's Gospel, we find this:

John 19:17-22 (KJV)

17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew "Golgotha": 18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was,

"JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS."

20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, andGreek, and Latin. 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate,

"Write not, 'The King of the Jews '; but that 'he said, "I am King of the Jews." '"

22 Pilate answered,

"What I have written I have written."

If you've ever seen a painting or a drawing of the crucifixion with the letters "INRI" written on a plaque above His head, this is an abbreviation of the Latin form "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum," which means "Jesus of-Nazareth King of-the-Jews."

Now, let's talk about the FUTURE, HIS future!

I believe in a joined two 3 1/2 year periods which is a One Seven.  I do not believe in your separated two 3 1/2 year periods which is not a One Seven.  Your middle is around 1000 AD, if one accounts for the start and the end of your one seven.  If one considers a joined  two 3 1/2 year period, then there is a true middle.  There can be only One true mathematical formula.  70 Sevens are decreed.  Or 70 - 7 year periods are decreed.  This is the Prophecy.

Kind of like an apple.  Split and separate that apple and oxidation begins on the open wound surfaces.  Keep the apple together and no oxidation happens.  Yet v. 26 says. After the 62 Sevens (or the 69th Week), The Anointed One will be cut off and have nothing.  What follows the 69th Week, a full One Seven.  Then sometime following the death; the people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. (70 AD)  The end will come like a flood, War will continue until the end (of what), and desolation's have been decreed. v.26 - He will confirm a covenant with many for one seven.   Three choices, 1. Christ as you say. 2. The ruler who came in 70 AD or 3. a future leader.  Not #1 - No covenant was given, He died at the end of the 69th Week.  Not #2 - No covenant was given, only #3 is viable.

If you do your math.  A One Seven is a One Seven, but,  2 x 3 1/2 equals Seven, and is not a One Seven.  3 1/2 + 3 1/2 is not the same as or does not equal (3 1/2 + 3 1/2)  The first is separated, the second is joined.

Shabbat shalom, Montana Marv.

Well you're entitled to your opinion, however I believe that it was Yeeshua` ("Jesus") HIMSELF who divided the last Seven of years! He was SUPPOSED to be anointed to be the King of Yhudah or the King of the Jews. Instead, at the half-way point of the last Seven, He left them DESOLATE! and then they CRUCIFIED Him!

On 3/3/2023 at 10:41 AM, Montana Marv said:

Oxidation precisely describes the abominations that desolated the city of Jerusalem! It's also seen in the judgments "being poured out upon the desolate!"

Yet v. 26 says. After the 62 Sevens (or the 69th Week), The Anointed One will be cut off and have nothing.  What follows the 69th Week, a full One Seven.

"AFTER" is like using a "greater than" symbol on a number line. How do you graph the one-dimensional statement, "x > 2?" One draws a line from left to right, and marks out numbers 0, 1, and 2 at least, on the line, draws a circle around the point defined as "2" and then draws a straight line right with an arrow head at the end! This signifies that it does not include the "2" itself, but it does include all the numbers to the right of the "2."

The text doesn't say "AT THE END OF the 62 weeks," nor does it say "IMMEDIATELY AFTER the 62 weeks!"

See, verses 25 and 26 are MAIN points in the outline, but then verse 27 goes back and fills in some of the DETAILS! That's the way that Jewish literature usually works. This is why people get mixed up in the genealogies of the Old Testament! The author will list all of the sons of a particular man first and then he will go back and begin listing the sons of the first of the man's sons! Then, he will list the sons of the man's second son, etc.

Look at the text again:

Daniel 9:24-27 (KJV)

24 "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city,
(1) to finish the transgression, and
(2) to make an end of sins, and
(3) to make reconciliation for iniquity, and
(4) to bring in everlasting righteousness, and
(5) to seal up the vision and prophecy, and
(6) to anoint the most Holy. 2

25 "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks (7 Weeks), and threescore and two weeks (62 Weeks):

(A.) the street shall be built again, and
(B.) the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks (62 Weeks) shall ...
(C.) Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and
(D.) the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and
(E.) the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

27 "And he (the Messiah) ...
(C. 1.) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and
(C. 2.) in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and
(C. 3.) for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate,
(E. 1.) even until the consummation, and
(E. 2.) that determined shall be poured upon the desolate."

Yeeshuwa` announced them "desolate" before He was crucified, but they didn't actually become "desolate" until 70 A.D. when the Romans under Titus destroyed the Temple with fire and burned part of the city of Jerusalem, as well!

Good! I'm glad you see this the same as I do.

The "End" is when all six of the purposes for the Seventy Weeks (found in verse 24) are fulfilled.

Nope! The Messiah DOES fit this phrase! HE will confirm (strengthen) the DAVIDIC Covenant (which Gabriel announced in Luke 1:30-33)! Why do you think He is called "the Son of God," "the Son of the Highest?" It's because HE is God's Messiah - God's Anointed One - God's CHOICE for Israel's King - God's SON!

It CAN'T be the "prince that shall come" or the "ruler who came in 70 A.D.," because that is the OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION "OF"! And, why go off looking for another fulfillment, when the first choice IS the Fulfillment?!

Math is one area where I excel! A "One Seven" is simply "1 x 7." but, half of the "One Seven" is simply 1/2 x 7 = 3.5" years. So,
1/2 + 1/2 = 1 and 1/2 x 7 + 1/2 x 7 = 1 x 7! Furthermore, if we include the unit of "years," we get ...

1/2 x 7 = 3.5 years and 1/2 x 7 = 3.5 years and 1/2 Week + 1/2 Week = 1 Week, just as 3.5 years + 3.5 years = 7 years.

The two halves don't have to be together, especially when the Messiah SPLIT them by leaving them DESOLATE! They are STILL suffering from this desolation! While the Jews have remained a people down through almost 2 millennia now, they have been made desolate through persecutions, inquisitions, Crusades, pogroms, the Holocaust, and now through terrorism from all sides! Whether its from the Hamas of the Gaza Strip, or the Palestinians of the West Bank, or the Syrians or the Lebanese or the Iranians, or the Muslim Brotherhood, they are constantly attacked as the muslims try to "drive them into the sea!"

The first 3.5 years, the first 1/2 Week, was the Earthly Ministry of the Messiah when He offered them the Kingdom during His First Advent.

The second 3.5 years, the last 1/2 Week, will be when the Messiah returns and again offers them His Kingdom! This time, they will accept Him and anoint Him their King!

He cannot split them.  Prophecy states a One Seven.  70 - Sevens are decreed. If two halves are not together, they are not part of One.  As mathematics illiterates;  3 1/2 + 3 1/2 does not equal (3 1/2 + 3 1/2)....  3 1/2 + 3 1/2 totals 7   But (3 1/2 + 3 1/2) is 7, it stands alone.

One can mean entirety,  One can mean fullness.  One can mean one and not two.  One can mean whole.  One can mean in full agreement.

Who is them?  Scribes, Pharisees, and Priests; most likely,  Yet those who followed Him are not.  Your answer falls short.

Why do you think He is called "the Son of God," "the Son of the Highest?" It's because HE is God's Messiah - God's Anointed One - God's CHOICE for Israel's King - God's SON!

He doesn't need to strengthen it, for He is the one to rule on David's earthly throne.  He cannot strengthen himself. He cannot strengthen an Everlasting Covenant.  Before Abraham was, I AM.  One cannot strengthen Prophecy, only verify it, or fulfill it.  There is no such thing as a Weak Prophecy or a Weak Eternal Covenant.

Jesus, the Anointed one is but a marker designating the end of the 69th Week.  He was given a crown of thorns. Christ was cut off in v. 26a. Then v. 26b is about Titus and 70. AD.  Then the "He" in v. 27 is neither Christ nor Titus.  This is a new entity, which establishes the onset of the final One Seven. (3 1/2 + 3 1/2)

the last 1/2 Week, will be when the Messiah returns and again offers them His Kingdom! This time, they will accept Him and anoint Him their King!

Yes after, and this fulfills Dan 9:24 where Israel is restored (grafted back in) in a moment.  All is forgiven.

Shalom, Montana Marv.

Who made that rule?!  That's not written anywhere! You just made that up because you NEED them to remain together!

You realize that NONE of that means anything, right? I understand what you're saying, though. You're thinking of a Week as a UNIT. And, if it was based upon some sort of 7-year cycle in nature, in the stars, or in the cycles of the sun, or ... SOMETHING, I'd agree! However, even if there was a 7-year cycle, there's still a way for it to happen: If the first half of a 7-year cycle is completed by the second half of a different 7-year cycle, then they could fit together as a complete 7-year cycle.

Who is them?  Scribes, Pharisees, and Priests; most likely,  Yet those who followed Him are not.  Your answer falls short.

No, the "them" refers the inhabitants of Jerusalem. After all, the prophecy that Gabriel shares with Daniel has that as the recipients of the prophecy: "upon thy people and upon thy holy city."

One can ENFORCE such a covenant, and that's what the word means! See, He can even "enforce" it without being "forceful" or an "enforcer." All He had to do was SUBMIT to His Father and be baptized as expected of Him!

Matthew 3:13-17 (KJV)

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying,

"I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?!"

15 And Jesus answering said unto him,

"Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness."

Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying,

"THIS is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!"

THAT is how YHWH God, His Father, chose to anoint His Son - with the Ruwach haQodesh, the Holy Spirit!

Nope. Sorry, but that doesn't work! There are NO subject nouns in verse 27 for the verbs translated with the "he" pronoun!

Here's the Hebrew of these verses:

Dani'eel 9:24-27 (Westminster Leningrad Codex)

This then translates word-for-word to ...

24 Weeks seventy are-determined upon-your-people | and upon-city your-holy to-finish the-transgression [and-to-make-an-end] [of-sins] and-to-make-reconciliation-for iniquity and-to-bring-in righteousness everlasting and-to-seal-up vision and-prophecy and-to-anoint holy of-holies:

The three verbs in verse 27, higbiyr, yashbiyt, and mshomeem, don't have an antecedent in that verse! The two verses are actually one sentence, and one must go back to verse 26 for the antecedent. It can't be naagiyd for that is the SECOND noun in a noun construct state (a.k.a., in English translation, it's part of the prepositional phrase!) That leaves only ONE possible masculine, singular noun for a person: Maashiyach! Messiah! The Christ! HE is the One who performs these three verbs!

Your "However" and "If" and "Then" and "could" makes what you have posted just another wild stab in the dark.  These are words that try to give a different meaning or approach to a subject matter.

There were no sentences in original manuscripts, this is true. And Christ cannot perform them.  He was cut of at the end of of after the 69th Week, leaving the final One Seven (3 1/2 + 3 1/2) for a future date.  You can't get around your own mathematics.  3 1/2 + 3 1/2 does not equal or equate to (3 1/2 + 3 1/2).

When reading this, Christ did not put an end to sacrifice, for they continued to 70AD.  The Holy of Holies was opened up, yet sacrifice continued; for Israel continued to follow the Law. Even Saul asked for letters from the High Priest so he could go and persecute those of "The Way" - believers in Christ.  Things continued as status quo.  So no, Christ did not put and end to sacrifice for it will continue into His 1000 reign.  Zech 14:21 - Every pot in Jerusalem and Judea will be holy to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice  will take some of the pots and cook in them.  So who is the one who will bring an end to sacrifice?  Not Christ.

In Christ
