It was the responsibility of the Levites to teach, conduct praise and perform music in the Temple, as they were ordered by David. This is now the calling of the Church. Here is the only reference I know of from the Gospels of Jesus singing a hymn with His followers. Matthew 26:30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

At any rate Paul encourages in these passages; Col. 3:16 and beginning at Eph. 5:18). Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. ...And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
