You should read it.  I hadn't read it in a very long time, so I dug it out of my Kindle library and started reading again

I have read dozens of newer translations and books by these and other authors, theologians, geologists, etc. The list of authors is abridged by me. I have read dozens of newer translations and books by these and other authors, theologians, believers and geologists.

Wow.  Thanks for the list!  Very impressive.  I wonder if all the derogatories, insults, etc that rv has been slinging at me will not be slung at that rather long list of dignitaries as well.

The versions I read are: ESV, NASB (1995), CSB (HCSB), NIV, KJV, RSV, YLT, et al., typically. I have the RV electronically but haven't read it.

(Genesis 1:1)  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:2)  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Somebody mentioned the Jamison-Faucett-Brown Commentary mentioned above. Here is the full exert:

(Genesis 1:1)  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:2)  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
(Genesis 1:3)  Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
(Genesis 1:4)  God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
(Genesis 1:5)  God called the light "day," and He called the darkness "night." Evening came and then morning: the first day.
(Genesis 1:6)  Then God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters, separating water from water."
(Genesis 1:7)  So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.
(Genesis 1:8)  God called the expanse "sky." Evening came and then morning: the second day.
(Genesis 1:9)  Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.
(Genesis 1:10)  God called the dry land "earth," and He called the gathering of the water "seas." And God saw that it was good.
(Genesis 1:11)  Then God said, "Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds." And it was so.
(Genesis 1:12)  The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
(Genesis 1:13)  Evening came and then morning: the third day.
(Genesis 1:14)  Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for festivals and for days and years.
(Genesis 1:15)  They will be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth." And it was so.
(Genesis 1:16)  God made the two great lights—the greater light to have dominion over the day and the lesser light to have dominion over the night—as well as the stars.
(Genesis 1:17)  God placed them in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth,
(Genesis 1:18)  to dominate the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
(Genesis 1:19)  Evening came and then morning: the fourth day.
(Genesis 1:20)  Then God said, "Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."
(Genesis 1:21)  So God created the large sea-creatures and every living creature that moves and swarms in the water, according to their kinds. He also created every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
(Genesis 1:22)  So God blessed them, "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."
(Genesis 1:23)  Evening came and then morning: the fifth day.
(Genesis 1:24)  Then God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so.
(Genesis 1:25)  So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
(Genesis 1:26)  Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth."
(Genesis 1:27)  So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.
(Genesis 1:28)  God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth."
(Genesis 1:29)  God also said, "Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you,
(Genesis 1:30)  for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.
(Genesis 1:31)  God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

It may be interesting to note that NASA finally admitted in 1998 that Earth's Moon has water on it and an atmosphere (albeit a small amount near the polar regions and a thin atmosphere seen from Earth in 1920). With a 10" to 16" telescope of the time thin clouds were visible in certain areas of the Moon.

One incorrect statement in your quote.

"Unfortunately, the Biblical notion of a universal catastrophic destruction of all living things in the recent geologic past, followed by a Supernatural regeneration of the face of the Earth and the restoration of its surface flora and fauna by the Lord God, is not something many men and women of science would even consider "

The bible does not teach that there was a supernatural regeneration!

Other than teaching that the Bible describes a great Flood (true), any of their suggested mechanisms are grossly inadequate ad hoc explanations of what we see in the world around us.

If you took all the miracles out of the Bible, you wouldn't have much left.  For example, having the dead return to life is not possible, yet it happens 10 times in the Bible.  Christianity is predicated on Jesus taking on the sins of the world and raising again on the third day.  God is not governed by the natural laws of the world He created.

Recent studies have estimated that Noah may have cared for 1,398 kinds of land-dwelling animals and flying creatures. This includes all living and known extinct animals. Using a “worst-case scenario” approach in our calculations, there would have been 6,744 land animals and flying creatures on the Ark.  The Ark as described in the Bible had a volume of about 1.88 million cubic feet.  (source) No problem.  Also, not every species were taken, but every kind.  The Great Flood happened about 4,372 years ago; more than enough time for the world to be re-populated.

I've research Biblical Creation for 40+ years and continue to do so. Maybe you could use the following: Pastor David Reagan Presents Evidence for the Gap Theory from the Creation Story

Gen 1

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

The first four days had no moon or sun to do as v18 states.

There is a possibility of the first 4 days being any length God wanted.

11 Pet 3

5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

There was light the first day, which is why there was an evening and a morning.

Since we know that evening and morning are caused by a single rotation of the earth and not light orbiting the planet, There is no reason to believe that the days were any longer than they are now.  keep in mind, there was no living thing on the earth before day three, and in fact, no dry land before day three.  Sorry, Dino, you simply didn't exist then.

The reason why geologists will not accept the gap theory is that it contradicts their assumption that the past is continuous with the present. There is no room in their naturalistic approach to science for a global cataclysm that would destroy all life and then require a new creation of plants, animals, and people such as the gap theory proposes.

Any cataclysm that would leave the earth "without form and void" (or "a shapeless chaotic mass" as The Living Bible expresses it), with "darkness on the face of the deep" everywhere, would require a worldwide nuclear or volcanic explosion that would effectively disintegrate the whole crust of the earth. All pre-cataclysm mountains would be blown into the sea and billions of tons of rocks and dust blown into the atmosphere, leaving the earth covered with "the deep" everywhere and "darkness" covering the deep everywhere.

Such a cataclysm would disintegrate any previously deposited sedimentary deposits with their fossils and thus obliterate all evidence of any previous "geological ages." Thus the gap theory, which is supposed to accommodate the geological ages, requires a cataclysm which would destroy all evidence for the geological ages.  source

Gap Theory conforms to neither the Scriptures or geology.  The "gap" is between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.  However, until verse 9 there was no dry land anywhere on the earth, and no life of any kind.  Dinosaurs didn't roam on an earth with no earth.
