"And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence." (1 Peter 3:14-15)

The Greek word used for "defense" is apologia, which gives the basic idea of defending a position (as in a court of law). Yes, it's important to defend the faith. We are in a spiritual war and are constantly being bombarded with worldy and secular philosophies. The verse above was given as a command, not a suggestion. If we want to not only survive, but thrive and redeem our culture, we need to heed these words.

If unbelievers are going to take you seriously when you witness, you need to be able to explain why you believe what you do. :24:

No, But you must have faith to be saved! Faith is a funny thing you either have it or you don't.

Without faith we have nothing, with Faith we have everything, if we believe!

They shall know Christ by our love one for another! That is powerful!

Hi backontrack, I think you misunderstand the OPs question a bit. I agree, having faith is essential, as you do, but we should always be ready to defend the faith, as Tess's post explains.

GBU,

eric.

Our defense of the tenents of the faith does not make them "more true" But, our defense may answer questions people have as they study and consider the faith claims
