How long is the UN going to standby on the sidelines and criticize us, when they're standing by in Darfur while hundreds of thousands of people are being murdered annually?

Those numbers are nothing compared to the horrific murders, starvation, rape, violence and extreme fear that Iraq lived under during the terror reign of Saddam.

I mourn for those families that lost loved ones, but it's not the United States doing the killing, it's terrorist within Iraq

Well actually, that is not really true. The high estimates put the number killed under Saddam at about 300,000 over the course of his 24 year rule. That works out to about 12,500 a year. The annualized death rate for Iraqis today is almost three times the annualized death rate for Iraqis under Saddam.

Kind of another reason why war is usually a bad thing.

FYI: National Geographic (which by the way, does NOT have a dog in this fight, but which DOES have a superlative reputation for accuracy) puts the murders of Iraqis under the Saddam Regime at 5,000.000 persons. What is the source for this 300,000 figure?

"Human rights groups believe about 300,000 people were killed during Saddam's 24-year rule, which ended when U.S.-led forces toppled his regime in 2003."

The National Geographic does not put the death toll at 5 million, but rather puts the total numbers of Kurds at 5 million.

So you would rather we fight the terriorist over here? You can't have it both ways. In war there are always innocent people that die, that is a tragedy. I can promise you if we leave Iraq, just pull out they, the terrorist will be over here coming after us again because that will send them a signal that we have no guts to follow through and finish a job. War is never pretty but sometimes it's necessary. The only one I don't hear complaining are the very ones that are fighting it. This is not a criticism of your statement, it's just a fact.

We aren't talking averages here forreskc, but since you brought it up . . .

We're talking about 300,000 + dead people murdered by one man vs the 34,000 dead people killed in an all out war against each other.

Where is your criticism for the terrorists that are responsible for this, don't try to rationalize against the US military presence either, that's a separate issue.

By averaging the "death toll" you cheapen the value of those lives lost.

It is not as black and white as you are painting it. No one is denying that Saddam was not a horrible murderous dictator. The question is are we and for that matter Iraq better off for going in. It is safe to say at this point that we are not, and its quite up in the air considering the current carnage whether the Iraqis are or not.

When Jesus time and time again in the Gospels advocated non-violence in response to injustice it was because Jesus knew the usual fruits of war. We are seeing it now.

I might add that war usually only results in more war. Every single war we have fought in the century, including the Cold War and the war in Iraq, is a direct result of World War I and that was to be "the war to end all wars".
