Guest LadyC
i think i'm gonna say something that is rather unpopular.... why is this not a great idea? do i like walmart? no. at least not their regular stores and super-stores. (i love the neighborhood market though.) they have really awful customer service. the worlds worst. i really think they actively train their employees to give terrible customer service, kinda like i believe denny's used to do back in the 80's and early 90s. do i shop at walmart? you betcha. you can't beat the price, and usually can't beat the selection. but all that aside, walmart's prescription plan for $4 has been a lifesaver to many people who could not otherwise afford to get medication. i'm grateful to know it's available in case we're ever without insurance coverage for any reason. why wouldn't it be just as fabulous for them to offer a medical clinic for people with low income? my daughter and her family are on medicaid.... but she and her husband recently got jobs... not great paying ones, in fact, he makes minimum wage and she doesn't make much more than that, but it's enough to get hem kicked OFF medicaid, and i'm sure that they will be next month. so if they lose medicaid and walmart opens up a clinic where they can get inexpensive health care, i'm not going to complain about it. i think it is a much better idea than our government providing insurance to every citizen in the country at taxpayer expense. Unpopular? That's not unpopular at all. I think it's a great idea. What is more convenient that stopping in at the Wal-Mart clinic, getting your prescription and your groceries all at the same place? The word is convenient.

Unpopular? That's not unpopular at all. I think it's a great idea. What is more convenient that stopping in at the Wal-Mart clinic, getting your prescription and your groceries all at the same place? The word is convenient. I agree. I think placing health clinics in Wal-Mart stores is a great idea. In addition, you can't beat their prices. Not long ago, Guiliani was asked about the cost of a loaf of bread. He said 1.50 and was scoffed at for being out of touch and thinking you could get bread that cheap. The last loaf of bread I bought at my local Wal-Mart was 1.08. It was the store brand, and it is just as good as any other in my opinion. Wal-Mart with their low prices makes our money go much further than it otherwise would, so I for one am thankful for them. The liberals who don't like them are free to pay twice as much elsewhere. Yep, you're so right, Butero! I also would like to add that many times you can catch Kroger brand bread $10 for 10 loaves and it's just as good as any of the national brands! I shop there all the time and since they hae started dropping their fabric line it just helps my owns shop out Wink wink. But I do have concerns that walmart with its cost cutting measures might not be so careful as it selects its doctors who will be running the clinics. I think that the concept in itself is good but I would worry about the quality of care and training those personnel have.

Not to mention small business becomes almost impossible near a Wal-Mart unless you have a very specific niche service/product to offer. First of all, prices are always dictated at waht the market will bear. Walmart just uses volume purchasing to deliver the product at a reasonable price. nothing wrong with that. Secondly, small businesses can compete against walmart. Take the town i live in for example, there are at least 100 small businesses that compete. Contrary to popular belief, walmart doesn't carry everything! The local independent grocery store opened up the year before walmart did, and boy you should have heard the lamentations of small business when walmart did. j&j the grocery store wasn't among those who were gnashing their teeth. They just knuckled down and matched walmart in prices. Walmart takes a loss on some of their stuff. J&j just used the same business model to fight walmart but added one thing to their business. That is Service! they tote your groceries out to the car for you at NO CHARGE. your not allowed to even tip the bag boys. They put your groceries in the bags for you, walmart makes you load your own groceries. j&j will go out of their way to make sure your happy. for example, i bought some chicken that was prepackaged at the processing plant and it was rotten. i called them up and they said throw it out and we'll refund your money when you come back. Here's a great lesson in capitalism, learned from "Veggie Tales" -- "find something they're not doing, and do that." And generally, with the big boxes, what they aren't doing is good customer service.
