What exactly is the difference between the soul and the spirit of a man?

I haven't found anything in scripture to explain exactly what they are...

I have been "told" that the spirit is the mind, will and emotions of a man but I sure can't find anything in scripture that actually tells us what the soul is or what the spirit is.

I only find conjecture by human beings...and they seem to disagree with each other.

I kinda thought that we have a "spirit body" that separates from the physical body at time of death.

I figured that the "soul" was a permanent recording of our mental capacity that goes with the spirit at time of "departure".

But I can't find anything in scripture to substantiate that.

I'd appreciate ANY enlightenment on this subject... :)

Greetings Catsmeow,

God breathed into man and he became a "living soul". This is the -life force- given to every man & woman at birth. Without it we would remain a hunk of dirt. The combination of the dirt and breath of God, create a vehicle or "tent" wherein dwells a "spirit". This is the core of everyone's personal motivation, desire, bent whether it be for good or evil. The spirit is what is behind the human "psyche". It is the one that is eternal, it is the one that shall inhabit our "new" bodies". The "breath of life" returns to God who gave it, but the destination of the "spirit" is dependent upon whether it has died to self and received the Holy Spirit, this spirit will see God, the unregenerate spirit will see the Lake of Fire.

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

DE: It says in Genesis that man became a living soul but it doesn't say what that is exactly.

You said it was a life force ...but what is that? If God breathes into a person and makes them a living soul, it is because He elected to give them life to begin with.

What happens when "clones" are developed? Do they having souls? Do they have spirits? Or are they souless or spiritless? :t2:

I believe it is the spirit that gives the flesh life so they can't be alive without it.

Smash: I think that's true because I have heard of the spirit "separating" from the body in Near Death Experiences...and the person can hover above their bodies for a time or enter into a tunnel of light...

I say this because my husband had a serious accident that brought him to the ER and he saw the "tunnel"...but was returned to his own body.

It seems that this "spirit body" can see, hear, think and feel...

I found these verses in the New Living Translation fascinating>....

2 Corinthians 12:1-4

1 This boasting is all so foolish, but let me go on. Let me tell about the visions and revelations I received from the Lord. 2 I was caught up into the third heaven fourteen years ago. 3 Whether my body was there or just my spirit, I don't know; only God knows. 4 But I do know that I was caught up into paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be told.

Cats,

I believe that the soul is the tangible thinkg and reasoning part of our physical and electrical makeup. It directs our responses. It is reflected in our thinking and personality in general. When we die physically, it does too.

The spirit is that eternal part of us that is in communication with the Holy Spirit. Our spirit also has the cpability to hear the doctrines of demons as it is able to communicate with the spirt realm.

"The spirit is willing, but the flesh (soul) is weak".

When we die physically, it is our spirit that is present with the Lord.

My understanding in regards to the body, soul and spirit of man -- (speaking as a believer) is as follows:

The body is our flesh , the vessel that houses are true self. It is in a state of deterioration and will die at some point. Someday, when the Kingdom of Jesus Christ is established on the new earth, our spirit will be housed in a new perfect body...something that even Job came to realize.

Job 19: 25 I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God ; 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes-I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

Our spirit is the true self , that which will go to be with the Father when the flesh returns to dust. It is that which was God breathed into the body...the breath of life that gives true life.

Genesis 2:7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life , and the man became a living being.

The soul is our conscience

Intriguing to say the least!

Either way, the two...both body and spirit...were always connected, never separated. Paul just wasn

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
