NASA Photo Shows Humanoid Figure on Mars

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Is it Bigfoot? A Tusken Raider from the first "Star Wars" movie? Or just a rock?

British newspapers went crazy Wednesday morning about an image from Mars that appears to show a humanoid figure descending a shallow hillside.

The "alien" is actually a blurry detail in a huge panoramic photograph snapped on the edge of Mars' Gusev crater by NASA's Spirit rover in early November, and posted on NASA's Web site on Jan. 2.

Naturally, it took the Photoshop skills of dedicated bloggers to find the "humanoid."

"NASA scientists have been puzzled by the peculiarly life-like image," declared the Times of London, despite the apparent fact that no one from NASA has had any comment.

The skeptical Web site BadAstronomy.com, however, scoffed, "Puhlllleeeeze. A man? It's a tiny rock only a few inches high. It's only a few feet from the rover!"

Other British papers saw the humo(u)r in the story, with the Sun theorizing that it was Detective Gene Hunt, the drunken, sexist policeman from the BBC time-traveling crime series "Life on Mars."

"It's Usama bin Laden!" declared one Times of London commenter. "All this time we thought he was in Pakistan."

Click here for article to see the picture.

For the full NASA image, click here - it's located in the bottom left corner. Click on the image to enlarge it and scroll all the way to the left and all the way down. Then slowly scroll up and you should see it along the rock edge after the front set of boulders. Then click on the image to set it back to the wide view, and you will get the sense of how tiny that "humanoid figure" is.

Some people have way too much time on their hands to find things like this!

It's probably just one of the characters from "Red Dwarf", nothing to worry about. Then on the other hand it could be .................................

Ted! (after all isn't he responsible for everything?

(keep scrolling down)

What does make me wonder though are the pictures that NASA published in December showing the discarded coke bottles on Mars and the sign advertising Budweizer that was half buried in the sand.

It's a 2 dimensional image. Everyone knows that abstract sculptures take on different forms and shapes from different angles. This could be a similar illusion. I would like to get a 360 degree view of the object, just to find an answer to all the questions. If you ask me, it's looks more like a sculpture of a Gorilla, maybe Mars is really the "Planet of the Apes. . ."

LPT I'm mortified! I obviously missed something, as I'm really thick please point me to "Scarlet's call for help". I'm not being facetious, I'll be really upset if our Scarlet is hurt :noidea: . I've looked through "fellowship hall", but nothing is obvious, and I'm in a hurry right now as I've got to go to work, I'll be back around 1am (our time - 2.00pm on Friday Pommy time).
