They will investigate it and if need be take the dog from the owner - and while I realize there is a potential risk the animal may be euthanized isnt that better than having it in the heat, rain, snow and everything else? Also realize that the family will know you called the shelter, and this could become problematic for the neighborhood harmony... if it was me - I would have never let them know my feelings and taken the poor pup in the middle of the night I feel for the little guy

Then when you call, let animal control know you have another house lined up for him if they find the home is unsuitable for the dog.

Then when you call, let animal control know you have another house lined up for him if they find the home is unsuitable for the dog. That's a great idea. That really is a great idea. And, as Meta said earlier, they will SO know it was me who called. What's keeping me from calling is that, after doing some research this morning, the dog's "basic needs" are being met. He has a continous supply of food and water now, and he has a dog house for shelter. So animal control, etc., is not going to take this on. I am going to call and talk to someone at the no-kill shelter here anyway (I found this morning during my research that we do have one YAY!). I just think it is so wrong that he is neglected by being left alone in the backyard, now on a leash (I think that started a week or so ago and am not sure what prompted it. I will find a way to ask and bring it up in conversation.). I finally saw the wife go in the backyard this morning to try and quiet him down because he was barking incessantly (which he ALWAYS does), and then she went back inside. He just stared at the door and continued to bark. He's also trying to chew through his leash. I hope he succeeds.

She was honest though and said animal services will do with him whatever they want, so I am NOT going to call and have him taken away, possibly to be put down. I'm going to see if I can find someone I know that will take him and love him and then do what I need to do. I'm going to need a lot of prayer, though, for this very uncomfortable conversation I am going to have to have with them.
