What does the Old Testament teach about Hell?
LaMonte replied to Marston's topic in General Discussion
HELL - Sheol (sheh-ole') Strong's Concordance #7585 Hades or the world of the dead. Sheol is translated in the Old Testament either as hell, the grave, or the pit. (1) The Hebrew word sheol literally refers to a deep pit under the earth. (2) Refers to the realm of the dead. (3) Usually when sheol is translated "hell" in the King James Version of the Old Testament, it does not refer to eternal punishment but of the place where good and evil people continue to exist after death. (4) The underworld which receives all the dead, though the. Old Testament does not have a clearly defined concept of the life beyond; it does clearly teach of a life after death. It spoke of the dead being in Sheol, meaning sometimes simply "the grave" and other times referring to a place for the departed dead, but often to a dreary fate. (5) Some passages in the Old Testament suggest the possibility of a better life beyond death for the believer, as in Daniel 12:2. (6) The word Sheol often suggests that the righteous will be rewarded and that unbelievers will be punished. It is used 65 time in the “KJV”. -
You use the word I lot. What about your husband? Where is he in your life?

It is Scripture the “Word” that speaks to me, the more I read the Word’ the more I feel His presence. I prefer to be led by the Word of God over feelings or what I think. The Lord leads through His spirit which never goes against his Word over what I feel. Feelings come and feeling go and feelings are deceiving, but one thing I know the Word of God is the only thing I know that is true. The Word of God is the Lord Jesus Christ speaking to me. 2 Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. It’s like when I’m anxious I go to Mat 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Anxiety takes away my contentment such as “2 Cor 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day”. I’m going to be 81 years old and my outward man is dying but my hope is in the inner man so I’m not upset about anything because I’m content in Christ Jesus alone. My hope is in “2 Cor 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal”.

This is so true. In John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The first commandment, in its prohibition of serving gods other than the one true God of Scripture. This is also true of the second commandment, which tells us not to make a “carved image” (Ex. 20:4–6). Here the law prohibits creating and worshiping visible images of God. I personally reject all images of Christ or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above. No matter what the Christian community says about this subject, I choose what the Word of God says over what they think. The Word of God says “Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth”: All pictures and statues of Christ are therefore a direct opposite to how He is described in the Bible. These false images give us an incorrect impression of the true Jesus Christ. The prophet Isaiah described Christ in this way (Isa. 53:2): “For He [Christ] shall grow up before Him [God the Father] as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He has no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.” It was His actions and message that were to attract attention, not any overly attractive physical features.

The second commandment (Ex. 20:4; Deut. 5:8 prohibits images of Christ. In Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Deut 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: No matter what they do, no matter how hard they try, the image that they create and put in front of us is a false one. I believe that the written word of God is enough along with sharing and teaching it. I also believe they are merchandising the Lord Jesus Christ. In the New Testament “Jesus” taught to share the Word of God freely as he did. Think of the millions, they are making. "1 Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

If we live 76 years, we get 4000 weeks in this life or 28,000 days or 86,400 seconds. We are all not granted the same amount of time on this earth unfortunately. I became a follow of Christ at the age of 23, I am now going to be 81, from the time I became a believer I have been very mindful that life is short. This reminds me of an illustration commonly used by C. E. Tatham to illustrate the sacredness of this one life. A little girl, shopping with her mother, was allowed to purchase some candy after the groceries had been bought. She stood before the glass case, intently eyeing the appealing assortment in the various square, glass dishes. First, she would point to the contents of one dish and say, “I want one of these.” Just as the storekeeper would reach for it, she would shift her attention to another variety and explain apologetically, “No, I want one of these.” After several such instances of indecision, the annoyed mother rebuked her with, “Dear, hurry up and make up your mind.” To this, the youngster replied with winsome logic, “But Mother, I have only one penny to spend.” “Only one penny!” “Only one life!” Be sure to spend it wisely. Avis B. Christiansen captured the solemn implications of earth’s little while in one of her poems:1 Only one life to offer, Jesus my Lord and King; Only one tongue to praise Thee, and of Thy mercy sing; Only one heart’s devotion, Savior, oh, may it be Consecrated alone to Thy matchless glory, Yielded fully to Thee. Only this hour is mine, Lord; may it be used for Thee; May every passing moment count for eternity; Souls all about are dying, dying in sin and shame; Help me bring them the message of Calvary’s redemption In Thy glorious Name. Only one life to offer; take it, dear Lord, I pray; Nothing from Thee withholding, Thy will I now obey; Thou who hast freely given Thine all in all for me, claim this life for Thine own to be used, my Savior, Every moment for Thee.

Recently I've been examining the whole issue of Christian merchandising and asking the question: Why does practically every ministry sell things to other believers (biblical teachings through books, tapes, seminars, music, movies etc.)? These are things sold within the body of believers aimed at believers. How are we to view this in light of what our Lord spoke, " In the temple he found those who where selling oxen, sheep, and pigeons, and the moneychangers at their business. ... And he told those who sold, ‘Take these things away; you shall not make my father’s house a house of merchandise.' " (John 2:14-16)? When I was saved 58 years ago VBS was free it was a outreach to the unbelieving world, now I have noticed the churches in the area charge any where from $5 to $50 per child. I know Christ and his Apostles would never charge for the word. I believe most of us have been marketed to and have literally bought into a whole system that has its pattern from the world. Few have ever questioned the initial premise and asked, " What is the basis for all of this?" Yet, where is this practice in Scripture? Did Jesus or any of the Apostles ever do this or sell anything related to teaching or the scrolls? To the contrary you can read Isa. 45:13; 55:1, and 2 Cor.11:7. There is no precedent for this in Scripture and there are actually prohibitions against this (see 1Tim.6:5; Jude 11). Of course, there is also the admonition not to "peddle Gods word for profit (2Cor. 2:17). When Jesus sent the disciples out he said, "give without pay " (Matt.10:8). There is a contrast here, one of merchandise and one of a mutual giving. The essence of Christianity is love and sacrifice. Giving expecting nothing in return. When we set up a monetary exchange (by obligation) we tamper with God's whole plan. Another factor is that the line between business and church has been blurred. Some leaders, teachers, and evangelists live an extravagant, prosperous life (far beyond that of the flock) paid for by the sales and proceeds of their ministry. I just love what John said 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. (1Jo 2:6 KJV) I am so glad we have the word and Holy Spirit to guide us. Matt 10:7-8 And as ye go, preach, saying, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. If Jesus Christ gives His wisdom away free, what makes ours so valuable we have to put a price on it? The ‘Religious Retailing Era’ has done away with… “Matt 10:7-8 freely ye have received, freely give”. When special teacher come such as on the family, marriage they usually charge money to listen to them. There is nothing wrong with a man or women being supported for teaching the word like the Apostles and early church leaders. The early church leader and the Apostle live by faith as people freely gave to them they were taken care of. In the early church this was also how the widows and poor were taken care of. But today it is a Business or a job where they expect a certain amount. I have heard statements like we just hired are pastor or elders or leadership. I always thought it was a CALLING not a job.

Here are some verses to think about. Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 1 Sam 15:3 “Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.” Here is God giving the command to Saul to destroy all the Amalekites and notice He even includes children and sucklings (babies). Is God being cruel? Of course not, God knows that if any of these ungodly children survive, they will grow up to become Amalekites and continue in the evil tradition of their fathers. They would worship false gods and sacrifice human beings along with all the other things that go with mankind. Amalek 1 Sa 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. 2 Ki 15:16 Then Menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not to him, therefore he smote it; and all the women therein that were with child he ripped up. Judgment of Babylon Isa 13:16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished. Isa 13:18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. Ephraim Ephraim’s children shall perish in a threefold gradation; (1) From the time of birth. (2) From the time of pregnancy. (3) From the time of their first conception. “Jamieson-Fausset-Brown” Hos 9:11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception. 12 Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left:yea, woe also to them when I depart from them! 13 Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. 14 Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. 15 All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters. infants ... dashed in pieces, etc. — (2 Ki 8:12; 2 Ki 15:16; Amo 1:13). Hos 13:16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. God used all these men to bring judgment.

I'm sorry I don't know how to edit it. I was just commenting on what you said, no matter who said it. What you say might be right from a human viewpoint and I respect your comment. I just choose by faith not to look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Cor 4:18 I believe God is in charge Rom 13:1

I am concerned about what’s going on around me, but on the other hand I have realized that I am not a citizen of this world anymore. My citizenship is in His kingdom of God and I’m ambassador of that kingdom who Jesus Christ is the head of. I have been delivered from the power of darkness, and have been translated into the kingdom of his dear Son: (Col 1:13) When I receive Christ as savior and Lord, I became part of the family of God “a chosen people, a holy nation, I am a now citizen and ambassador of the Kingdom of God. I want to do what Jesus said Luke 9:60 “Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.” He also said in Matt 8:22 “Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead”. The dead is the unbelieving world and its system. Our Hope comes from the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ Rom 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek”. I choose by faith not to look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Cor 4:18

Amen He comes to Sacramento, Calif in the late 70s. I and my wife went to a dinner they had for him, there was about 100 couples there. He was trying to get support for his ministry on getting Bible into Russia and shared about his book God's Smuggler.

Hell is a prison of everlasting chains from which there is no hope of release (Jude 6). It is a furnace of conscious torment where the fire never goes out (Matt. 13.49-50). It is a place of severe misery where the worm does not die (Mark 9.47-48). This is why I must share the gospel; I really like a Quote from C.T. Studd: "Some want to live within the sound of Church or Chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop, Within a yard of HELL." 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

There is none that doeth good, no, not one If we measure ourselves with the human race, some are better than other, some are good. Some are evil. I like what Paul says in “2 Co 10:12” For we dare not make ourselves of the number or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. If we measure all mankind to God, the Father this what the Scripture says. It says in Rom 3:10 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. In Jer 17:9 Jeremiah called their hearts "deceitful" and "desperately wicked." The word deceitful means "crooked, polluted or slippery." The word translated "desperately wicked" is used elsewhere to mean "incurable" (2 Sam. 12:15;). The New Testament does teach that God requires perfection — that we “be perfect, as [our] heavenly Father is perfect”. (Matt5:48) So, we have a problem: God requires mankind to be perfect which is impossible for us to achieve. The book of Romans teaches that Christ righteousness is imputed to all those who are believers in Christ Jesus, so we are perfect in him. Praise God for this. Look at the days of Noah, eight people were saved out of hundreds of millions of men women and children who were drowned in the flood. Look at a lot, only him and his two daughters were saved out of the city which was destroyed by fire. Look what happens at the return of Christ. But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. “2 Pet 3:7” Who are the ungodly? Those who don’t have the righteousness imputed to them by Jesus Christ, all unbelievers. Look at the great white throne judgment, they all end up in eternal fire. I have never meant a truly moral, kind or a person of integrity in my lifetime and that includes myself. There is only one I know that have those qualities, the Lord Jesus Christ and him alone.
