taking those extra packets of condiments?

Excellent question. I have been known to grab a couple extra packets at times, and I know I have taken a handful of paint samples for a project that didn't involve painting. oops lol Restaurants provide condiment packets as a convenience to their customers. You buy a burger, maybe you want extra salt - or pepper, or ketchup. No problem. The question though isn't "is it stealing?" Probably not. The restaurant owners don't charge for them usually (though some have started to do so), So on a technical & legal level, is it stealing? NO. But here are some things to think about * Restaurant condiments run the owner an average of 3 - 10 cents per packet- more for gourmet stuff. This may not seem significant, and this cost is often offset by a meal purchase so it isn't a loss. However, what about the absence of said meal purchase? This is a common thing that people do.. and the concern is raising prices. That restaurant still has to pay for the condiment packets even when they aren't taken within the context of a meal. It's an escalation factor, because where do we draw the line? A public restroom in a store has toilet paper, paper towels, and soap for you to use in the context of using the restroom. Does this mean it would be OK to take several rolls of toilet paper, paper towels, or a bottle of soap? no, you would likely see that as stealing. Or what about taking the shopping cart home with you (it was provided to you to use, you can use it at home- and it doesn't cost you- there is no price tag). Or taking towels from a hotel? That would get you in legal trouble for stealing property. Finally, think about the cost in the end. If everyone takes say, 25 extra ketchup packets from a fast food chain, they have to recoup that cost. More often than not, the cost is passed on the consumer. They either start charging for extra packets, or the price of the meals themselves go up. Mel's Conclusion: Is it stealing? Technically and legally - NO. Is it in poor taste- it can be , yes. and Should a Christian do it- I would say not in excess and not without purchasing a meal. Besides, a bottle of ketchup will run you maybe $2 if that. Mustard can behad for 88 cents. -

Should Christians charge for services rendered?
Hawkeye replied to Hawkeye's topic in General Discussion
The thing is, this is one of the simplest questions I have heard asked. It should be a no brainer, so I am amazed it was ever controversial, and anyone thought it was wrong to charge for a legitimate service. I agree with you! (by the way, your signature is outdated lol) -

Hawkeye, if you need to make a living, of course you should charge for your services. If someone needs your helo and cannot pay you then you should offer your service for free....IF YOU CAN. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty about earning a living for yourself and your family. You know MorningGlory, I don't spend much time in chat, and I don't know what all was said here that had to be removed, but I cannot imagine anyone would attack Hawkeye for charging for a legitimate service. This doesn't even seem like something that would be controversial. As far as helping someone for free, you only have so many hours in the day, so you would have to do that based on the leading of the Lord if it were even possible to find the time. Maybe there is more to this than I am aware of, but based on the comments in the OP, and the service she is providing, I just don't know why anyone would attack her. Oh , you have not been in chat ... no. I'm not being attacked on this thread, I had an encounter in chat (I'm not mentioning names at all), that came after me for charging for my services. This was admittedly a couple of weeks ago, but it still bothered me-- so thought I would get opinions from the group members. Are you happen with the opinions on here? Oh yeah I got the answers LIke I said in my prior post -

Thanks everyone for your replies. The concern was, that it was brought to my attention - that I shouldn't charge for my tutoring services. I do this to make a living (in addition to the charger sales etc). Now have I given away services as I feel led? Or course, even have given away chargers as I feel led. Was just feeling uncertain fully on charging on a regular basis. Thanks guys -
Hi Everyone I would like to get your thoughts on something that has been discussed in chat recently. If a Christian offers a service (tutoring, lawn mowing, painting, washing windows, cleaning out cars, etc..) Should they charge for those services, or should they simply give them away to "help people out?" What circumstances does it depend on, if any? My thoughts are this: If a person is providing a service- they are spending their time, talent, and resources to do so. They deserve to get paid for the hard time spent, and it baffles me how some individuals are convinced they ought to give services away. If Christians who work for themselves never charged, they would be bankrupt. Now there will always be (in my mind) an exception to this- and that is a divine leading of God. In other words, if God leads me to- and informs me I am to help an individual "pro-bono", I will definitely do so.

Seyi--- It is somewhat disappointing that you would feel so strongly about this, but I would like to offer some thoughts. If God sees the heart (1 Sam 16:7), then it shouldn't matter if the person can verbally speak or not. Salvation comes through faith, and that is in our heart/mind. If an individual was say- tortured and gagged, unable to speak but accepted Christ before death.... would that be an illegitimate salvation? I don't think so!!. So as far as the issue of a hearing impaired or mute individual- God is all knowing. He definitely created that individual with that specific difficulty. An individual who is speaking in sign language and is deaf, IS speaking with his mouth in the only way he/she knows how.I can't wrap my brain around this narrow minded view. You seem to be saying that an individual who is unable to speak verbally can't be saved, which is just denying the very loving nature of Christ and what he did for us on the cross. Somebody on a vent can not speak. Does this mean they can't accept Christ on their death bed? The Bible tells us that God is not willing for ANY to perish, and that Salvation is freely given to all. It seems to me you are looking at the literal wording of the verse. This isn't taking into account the spirit of the verse, which I believe is saying that when you are saved- you must make some type of public confession. Whether this is writing it in clouds, signing language, or speaking- I think they are all legit ways to do so. Everyone can communicate somehow (shaking a head ""yes"" for example), or writing it down. To judge that others can't be saved is encroaching on very dangerous territory.

Good thoughts there Hawkeye, I am sorry that you took my post the way you did. I thought you knew me well enough to recognize me in my good willed sarcasm mode. I apologize for causing you hurt. I also am not an Osteen fan, but I cannot endorse the actions of petty criminals behaving badly either. Their unruliness reflects badly on the church as a whole. It's okay

By the way Hawkeye, was this a drive-by posting? Do you have a position yourself, or are you just a rabbel-rousing troublemaker? Well, to address your comments I will take a two fold approach. First of all, when I last checked the thread- there were no replies. Secondly, I have chosen to receive notifications, but have apparently not received them- therefore I was unaware that people had posted. I think your accusation toward me is rude, demeaning, and is a poor excuse for how to be loving in ministry.- That being said, I do have a thought. I completely disagree with Joel Osteen's philosophy and doctrine. No, I don't think they should have been allowed to disrupt services- but I think arresting was overkill. They could have simply been asked to leave and escorted out by security. Osteen's approach in the video of treating it as persecution and the devil trying to distract, was out of line as well.

Hi everyone... I am struggling tonight, really the past couple of nights. As you know I was in a bad car accident nearly two years ago. Before my accident, I was on the path to work as Child Life Specialist. It was no Doctor or PA like I had originally started out to do, but it was amazing. It would give me the chance to work with children… and in the medical field. It was a neat little package of medicine, psychology , and children. Sparing details, things happened to derail that path. So I decided that God was calling me to work with troubled teens. I set out to look at options- and decided on a path of Criminal Justice & Sociology, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a Master degree in Social Work. So far, so good- I am doing well and this is a realistic goal. After my wreck, things were put into motion and I entered early menopause, so that went the opportunity to have a child of our own. This is why Mother and Father’s Day is so hard for me. I look around and see all of the children, the couples who are happily married with children. And as happy as I am for them, I grieve. I grieve because I see, what I lost with my wreck. I want to have that ability to impart knowledge, care, and things to a child. It is a very real void, when your desire is to have children- and you are unable to. My husband and I have found options to sort of fill that very deep void in our life. We started out to become host “parents” for a foreign exchange student, and we should be able to do this for next school year. I have also been approved to be a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and CASA. We also have a young man who entered our life through our new church that we think very highly of. This is an individual that has his path in life in order. He is a great student, and even won scholarships. (As I write this, he will be a Freshman in college in the Fall) We are really proud of what he has accomplished and will continue to accomplish. He has brought true joy into our lives, for which we are very thankful, and we are thrilled to be able to know him. He has a bright future, is kind, compassionate, loving and caring. An all around great young man, and most importantly- he is a strong Christian and rooted in Christ- which is not something you often see that young. He (I will go with the name Derek). Derek has got his mind set on the path toward a very good medical career (Occupational Therapy, Doctor- and possibly equine therapy with children). I see what I missed, I see the grieving process I have to go through. I am very happy for him, I really am- I just see the vitality, the youth, and what I could have had. Is this wrong? All of the options aside, I still grieve sometimes. Holidays geared toward parents are hard on me.. Any thoughts? I am pretty sure I'm not alone.

Where do we draw the line between true and false?

I see often times, somebody will insult another individual- and then add the phrase "LOL" to the end, thinking that somehow those 3 letters make it not a insult... I am generally laughing if I say LOL.........
