"we feel better about ourselves knowing that an old ugly woman can get a shot at 15 minutes of fame."

She's not old; she's only three years older than me and, I might point out. four years YOUNGER than Sharon Stone! And I don't think she's all that ugly either; most women's beauty is the result of makeup expertise and she's just one who hasn't acquired the knack. I do notice it's only men whom I've observed trashing Miss Boyle's appearance and talent. What's up with that?

I'm speaking in terms of the music business.

22 is too old for a solo artist.

What about the 'ugly' part?? :noidea:

how many famous solo singers (bands don't count) can you name that are not beautiful people?

Meatloaf.

who else???

Luciano Pavarotti, Celine Dion, Lady Ga Ga, Pink, Barbra Streisand.....how am I doing? :21:

Thank God that He Loves us and thinks we are all precious and beautiful to our Father. :21:

Well of course God does.

But it is still true that man looks on the outside.

"Man" is more concerned with such things than women, me thinks. How else could Donald Trump or Seal marry supermodels? Oh yeah, they're rich; I forgot, a lot of women look inside.....the wallet. :noidea:

Guest LadyC

believer, you're not weird. my dad made his living photographing the rich and famous at their weddings, but his passion was photographing old people, poor people, disfigured people.... like you, he loved the study of humanity.

Not when you have a voice like hers! And a lot of people apparently agree.

i'm listening to the video now. yes, she missed a couple of notes in the beginning of the song. so what? that could be polished out in a studio SO easily! the woman has more raw talent than most pros have in their little finger. and in fact, she has more vocal command than most pros have.

She got into the semi finals, so those couple notes must not have mattered. The songs she sings are not easy songs to sing, and she has perfect vocal command. And more raw talent, I agree, LacyC.

I just watched it again. It was even better. She really has a stage presence, and always gets a standing ovation.

What style of music one sings has something to do with what one can get away with or not as well (as far as looks and age go), I think.

When she makes an album, I'll be one of the first to go out and buy it.

But it is still true that man looks on the outside.

Actually, I've been thinking about this, and I believe I'm understanding what Yod is saying.

Consider, what made her first song so awe-inspiring? Sure, she was good, but why did it shock us that she'd be so good?

She really didn't look like what we think a good singer should look like, did we?

It's like that cell phone employee who sang opera - granted, opera is a very difficult music style to sing, but still - you don't expect that out of people who don't "look" the part.

Even Barbara Streisand looks glamorous despite her countenance (recall she became famous when she was younger, too).

In our society, fame and glamor go hand in hand. One has to be extra-ordinarily talented to be non-glamorous yet famous. And even then, the industry does the best it can to glamorize you once in.
