Onelight's

Short and sweet ... yes, sex out of wedlock is sin.

When a church discusses this, they have to discuss it within the context, history.

I disagree.

The first, the second or both? When you answer, please give your reasons.

Concubine

A concubine was a legitimate wife; however, she was of secondary rank. This is evident by the references to teh concubine as having a husband (Judges 19:2). Concubines were presented opposite the wives of higher rank. The ability to have and to keep a concubine was a sign of wealth, status and royalty.

Refers to secondary wives, a feature of royal, ancient Near-Eastern culture.

A quick note: King David had a problem with lust. he had many wives - concubine - Yet there is no indication that God ever approved. In fact, it was his lust that eventually led to his downfall.

Hunter's

It was not considered " unmarital sex", the term concubine and wife are used interchangeably. In those ancient times, before the law, multiple wives were permitted, if you could afford them,i.e., support them. Concubines were not prostitutes

.

Precept's

Before what law? Verses please. Why do you think they're used interchangeably if they mean the same, why would the interpretors use two different words to define the same situation?

Hunter's

What law............the 10 commandments and most of the book of Leviticus...I'm sure you are familiar with these.

I'm familiar with those, yes, but not the one you're referring to that abolished multiple wives. Verses please.

Hunter's

Concubine and wife are used interchangeably because the second, third, fourth and so on wives did not have inheritance rights nor did any of the children from these marriages.

Only the first wife and children received inheritance.

But these marriages were all legal at the time and there was legal paperwork, so any physical union was not outside of the marriage.

You can verify this information in most of the many commentaries written by biblical scholars.

Show me the evidence and stop with the run around.

The first, the second or both what, wives?

I dont mean to speak for OneLight, but i believe OneLight is showing that concubines were legitimate wives, they just held a secondary rank to the primary wives

Allow me to present it all to you. I made two statements, you said you disagreed, then I ask what you disagreed to. It really is not confusing ...

Out of curiosity, precepts, do you believe that a man could have more then one wife? If so, where do you get this teaching from?
