Guest LadyC
i do think one has to have a valid reason to run a background check. maybe one of the cops on our forum can verify that. however, obama does go to great lengths to keep his background information buried. i suspect his reason is simply the ability to wield his power over anyone who may dislike him or his agenda and intimidate others from making similar attempts. It is truly amazing how many different government agencies are notified and alerted when a background check goes through NCIC - especially if you have a security clearance that is classified. O is probably pretty high up there on the list...

Police officers are not permitted to run background checks on individuals unless they are currently being detained. I believe that would be the only violation that the officers committed. Police should not be able to use ther access to information in this way. As Ovedya correctly pointed out, Police can only run background checks under certain conditions

No here they just get sacked. it's not a question of the vuictim of this action being a public official it's a question of abuse of power by the officers concerned. There are problems of police and others with access to such databases passing information onto third parties.

However, with Obama being a public figure such as president, subjects him to more public scrutiny than any other person and I don't seem to think it is such a big deal because Obama should be subject, as president, to closer scrutiny. However, if it was against the police department's policy and procedures, then I think it is wrong. Nikki
