I've been hearing and reading lots of debates about listening to secular music. This is my own opinion on the matter. I believe listening to secular music is about as wrong or right as watching secular TV. That is, we are responsible for what we listen to/ watch. While watching TV, we as Christians have to know what and what not to watch, for example I really like watching shows like Friends, According to Jim, My wife and kids, most Discovery and National Gerographic channels and shows, God TV etc... but there are also many other shows that are really inappropriate too like pornography, shows depicting wizards and witches ( like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies which depict witches and wizards as good), show's discrediting God etc... Now here its obvious that it's me who has to be discerning ( with knowledge from the Word of God) and decide what and what not to watch. It's the same with music, some music is really inspiring like Ronan Keating, Celine Dion, P.O.D, Michael Bolton, Creed etc.... but then some music is just outright anti-christ like Jay-Z, Metallica, Limpbizcuit etc... again we are to be consious as to what kind of music we should listen to and be discerning. I really suggest reading about a singer or their style of music before buying an album. I had unknowingly bought lots of music by various artists which had lots of swear words, dirty talk, etc... and when I learned about how bad listen'n to this stuff can be i immediately destroyed or gave away hundreds of dollars worth of CDs and deleted anything which i downloaded. Also there was a discussion in the Worthy Chat and i mentioned certain types of music that i listened to and senior members and watchmen made me wise on some of it and i immediately stopped listening to it. Someone on the Christian forums mentioned a very beautiful thing which i really liked. They said that music was made by God to Praise Him. While I'm pretty confident on the things I wrote on the first and second paragraph, this is something that i really do agree with. I really believe that Christian music is the best to listen to and sing because this kind of music really helps in relaxing, uplifting and it reminds us again and again about how awesome God is. I'm a 22 year old too so I can understand that most youths will maybe only half agree with me. I had so many friends who listen to music by eminem and all these other wannabe " gangstas" and noticed their language turning filthy over time. They even talked about doing crazy things likes drugs and stuff. So its living proof that certain music can be a very bad influence on us. I also noticed changes in myself when i listened to Christian music. Infact it was worship music in Church and Christian worship leaders that helped cure my really really bad temper. I used to be a maniac and got so angry so quickly that you can probably find the DNA of my knuckles on the eyes of many people ( when i punched them in anger!!), so my pastor advised me to join up with the youth music team and practise with them, i felt change almost instantly. I learned keyboard and drums from the church teams and I even play them for the main service. The point of all this jibberish is that the words in Christian music are directly given by God and thus hold substance and make sense too ( unlike most secular songs which always sing about how " you did this to me, I dont need you anymore, you this you that!!" people singing to unnamed persons like their lovers or parents etc...). So you can listen to clean secular music, but i'd rather suggest gospel music. So thats it, again... THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AND THUS MAY / MAY NOT BE WRONG. I'M TOTALLY OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS CORRECTIONS AND OPINIONS!

I think music is different then tv. Music has a power to it that can change a mans heart. I watch a lot of secular tv infact thats pretty much all thats on. It dosnt have the same effect on me as secular music. With music you can just feel it, not the same with tv in my opinion.

It's sorta hard if you don't have cable hookup. MillennialSaint Edited October 6, 2009 by MillennialSaint

Soundtracks from video games and movies. Some jazz. If it has lyrics (rarely), it should be something I'd feel comfortable sharing w/fellow Christians. It is more where your heart and your conscience are at. I had a Christian friend who listened to the Beatles, "Here comes the Sun" and substitute it with "Here comes the Son." In fact one individual said, that all love songs (secular) are directed towards God (and I agree). The Only Entity that can give us everlasting consistency.
