I don't know whether to say 'ugh!' or not. Maybe it's good business practice but....it's just kinda weird. :noidea:

A friend of mine was making funeral arrangements out of state for her mother-in-law. She realized the funeral homes really zapped you when it came to the price of the casket. She saw this casket store that sold them much cheaper. Not only did she buy one of theirs, but she came back to her home state and opened up her own casket store. She does a brisk business. It was much a matter of time before Walmart caught on.

I have always had a bit of an issue with a store that sold mustard and tires within a short walk of each other... now urns and caskets? I guess it's something we will all need at some time, but it still gives me the creeps... :noidea:

Louisiana does not allow anyone but licensed funeral directors and the like to sell caskets. This means there is little to no competition so the prices are ridiculous. While I wouldn't be so keen on seeing one in the local Wal-mart I believe there needs to be more competition. Competition keeps prices low. This is why we have antitrust laws. This is another reason I get irked every time the management tells me they are raising prices to remain "competitive". In my mind lower prices, not higher, make you more competitive.

I agree it is kinda creepy. However, What creeps me out even more are funeral homes that take advantage of people and families at a time when they are having to make difficult and emotional decisions. If it were me, bury me in a pine box from wallmart for all I care.....the less it costs my loved ones the better.

:noidea:

I used to have such indecision and anxiety over what "to do" .... then I realized one day that I do not care ... urn or box... it really doesn't matter to me. I totally agree that the funeral industry as a whole is based on dealing with people in the worst possible circumstances of grief and pain - and charging outrageously for their services. It's sad. I read a story about the morgue in Detroit which is absolutely packed with bodies of people who have no resources from family members for burial and the city cannot afford to bury them... I'm horrified by that.
