If Your Password Is 123456, Just Make It HackMe

by Ashlee Vance

Friday, January 22, 2010

Back at the dawn of the Web, the most popular account password was "12345."

Today, it's one digit longer but hardly safer: "123456."

Despite all the reports of Internet security breaches over the years, including the recent attacks on Google's e-mail service, many people have reacted to the break-ins with a shrug.

According to a new analysis, one out of five Web users still decides to leave the digital equivalent of a key under the doormat: they choose a simple, easily guessed password like "abc123," "iloveyou" or even "password" to protect their data.

One trick I was taught - use a word but switch some letters for numbers.

For example:

Take the word "horse" and make it something like "h0rs3" or "h0r5e"

it wasn't too long ago that a supermod's password was 12345 and the site got hacked and everything that was posted in 2 weeks or a month got deleted.

a supermod of what site? clearly you're not talking about THIS site.

nebula, another suggestion is to spell your word backwards. but you should always include at least one numerical digit.

Good question. We don't have a "supermod".

(Unless you are referring to the infamous ted with his royal kingdom.)

Here's three that I stopped using 8 years ago.

I change all my passwords twice a year and never ever use them again. Old forced habbits from work.
