It most likely is a doctrine made by man. that could very well come from scripture like 2 Thessalonians 3:10b If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. or Matthew 7:8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. It's really a vague question. Help, unto what? Health, prosperity, salvation? And who are we talking about? Those who are able to help themselves, and try to do so... those who are able, but choose not to, those who are somewhat able... those who are completely unable? When I am in a bind and have absolutely no course of action, does God help? Yes! Does God always "help" in miraculous ways? We cannot help ourselves. We can't help ourselves into salvation. We can help ourselves with other things though. We can choose to work or not work, and bear the consequences of that. G-d is not a nurse-maid, and He has given us guidelines how to live by FAITH, and even empowered us to be able to do so by giving us His Spirit. 'Draw near to G-d, and He will draw near to you.'
