Amid flaring political debate about a proposed New York City mosque near Ground Zero, there has been little commotion about the Pentagon's chapel where Muslims can gather in daily prayer near where a hijacked jetliner struck the building Sept. 11, 2001.

The lack of commotion is due to the lack of controversy. The chapel in question is open to all faiths and is a religiously sterile environment where any of the represented faiths can come and use the room as needed. It's not a church, a mosque, a synagogue, or anything else- it's just a room.

Perhaps the point is that Muslims exist peacefully with others, but certain Conservative Republicans would much rather talk about how scary Muslims are and gin up controversy about this for political gain regardless of the fallout from it, rather than just leave it at the first amendment covering this.

I have not heard any Republicans refer to the Muslims as scary and as for Muslims living in peacefully with others, trying going to a Muslim country and openly practice the Christian faith and see how long you survive.

This is not a first ammendment issue. No one has once denied Muslims the right to practice their religion and this country has bent over backwards to accomodate their needs. Asking them to move the mosque to a more acceptable location is not a violation of any first ammendment rights.

You're right up there on that soapbox, B.E., but I can't figure why. You should not be trying to lecture Americans about our feelings toward islam. YOUR country was not attacked by radical islamists....yet.

It surely ISN'T a first amendment issue; they can worship as they wish anywhere in the U.S. To say otherwise is disingenuous.

Not only conservative republicans...but an ever-growing list of muslims are coming out against Rauf (the builder) and his desire to build the center.

Yes; I read about this just an hour or so ago. Interesting.

Yes; I read about this just an hour or so ago. Interesting.

Muslims are not stoopid. They are tired of being treated badly because a large portion of their faith has been commando'd by extremists. They completely understand that this is a bad idea, and that placing a mosque in that locale doesn't build bridges. They don't trust Rauf any more than the rest of us do.

I don't believe for a second that the majority of muslims want this mosque at ground zero...

"The Muslims never asked for this [mosque], and even the angry Muslims do not want it. This is one of the few times when the two opposing sides are in agreement. Nevertheless, the dispute flared up. It made the front pages of newspapers and [featured on] the major television programs. Demonstrations were held in the streets, and large posters were plastered on New York buses, demanding that the construction of the mosque be prevented and reminding everyone of the 9/11 crime. This really is a strange battle!

Those pushing to build this mosque may be construction companies, architect firms, or political groups who want to exploit this issue. The individual who submitted the building application
