Roylance, The Baltimore Sun 11:04 p.m. EST, January 26, 2011 The rush-hour snowfall caused a number of accidents and disabled vehicles, mostly along Interstate 83 and Interstate 695. State Highway Administration spokesman Dave Buck said that by 8 p.m., traffic had slowed or stopped on some interstates as trucks jackknifed, or lines of motorists became bogged down in the rapidly accumulating snow. The heavy rush-hour traffic made it all that much more difficult to keep the roads clear. I-83 was closed from downtown at President Street to the Baltimore County line, city police wrote on their Twitter account at 9 p.m. Det. Kevin Brown, a city police spokesman, said the department was dispatching uniformed district detectives to "alleviate" congestion on I-83. The road had been closed in the city, Brown said, and they were working to get cars off the interstate. He said people should stay home unless there is an emergency, but for already on the road, "just sit tight and be patient," he said. On the beltway, a state police dispatcher said about 9:30 p.m. that I-695 was not closed, but that tow trucks are having trouble removing disabled, abandoned vehicles. She said salt trucks then cannot get through the "bumper to bumper" traffic on the Baltimore County portion of the highway. Full report ~~~~ I have friends posting being stuck out there for hours - one took 3 hours to make a normally 15 minute drive.
