Guest Christopher

What does the Bible say about divorce and in the age of a 50% divorce rate, what does this say about us?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

Hi Christopher,

I see no one has responded to this.

Yeshua (Jesus) clearly states "Anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultry."

Matt. 19, it also says "at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female', and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'  So they are no longer two, but one.  Therefore what G-d has joined together, let man not seperate."

Xan, but where does it say this in the Bible?  Where does it say that if there is a divorce and then a man remarries, that is considered adultry?  I have never heard this before.

Guest Christopher

Thanks to all for your replies.

I have done a little searching on my own and have come up with this:

Jesus said:

"Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery."

Luke 16:18

Paul said:

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God."

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

From this I understand that a divorced man who remarries is entering into an adulterous relationship, on par with many other vile sins.  Is it enough to beg forgiveness, or is it the mere fact of being remarried that makes one an adulterer and an ongoing sinner?  If so, there are millions of adulterers out there, even among church leaders.

Again, any assistance in my struggle to understand this would be much appreciated.

I still don't understand this either, Christopher...and please don't anyone think I'm being crued, but along with the defining of "adultry" I have heard that many people look at "lust" as being adultry, as well...which brings to my mind pornography.
