For example are we really ready to take on social security are really ready to get rid of that and tell old people well go down to the Church and get a check?

No, we can't afford that. We can afford to drag the oldies before their family and say "look after your own!". It's not harsh, but that would address the REAL need for families to return to the proper biblical model.

The church is to care for the needs of the poor and the widows. How are those defined and by whom? (rhetorical question)

Homosexuality is an abomination to God, thus eliminating the possibility of civil union.

God does not support gay marriage.

Homosexuality was just a segue to talk about socialism and in particular welfare. We all agree it's wrong .

There are many, many older folks whose families cannot, or will not, take care of them. And, of course, there are those who have no family. What would become of these people? :emot-questioned:

Here's what I said in the OP

I am still very concerned for how the heart of man can bear the burden of the poor, I know there are not many true God-fearing servants out there, but the only way forward to address the issue is to face it head on rather than insulating one self against it by hiding behind the government. It won't be pretty when it happens and I foresee a lot of painful stories coming to light before we start seeing the fruit of returning to His ways.

We can't afford welfare forever, so we can't pretend that the church taking back it's role means moving away from assured care for the poor. But welfare does not address the underlying 'stinkin thinkin' in the hearts of people, whereas returning to looking after your own family, and helping those in need around you voluntarily and from the heart, does.

Who would of thought it wasn't about Politics. :noidea:

I realise this thread is about politics / ideology. What I meant was that the question I was posting was not intended to be about politics / ideology.... Sorry - my post was not clear. :b:

One reason why I am asking the earlier question is because ....if I am not mistaken.... sometimes / often when this issue crops up on these boards, I think perhaps it might sometimes possibly be looked at / viewed from the point of view of Christians / churches in relatively rich nations. However there are many Christians who live in countries where the majority of the people are not financially rich. There are many Christians who live in countries where the percentage of Christians in that country is just a small minority of the population. If Christians / churches in those countries are always not supposed to allow the governments of those countries to help the people of the countries in any way.... then what if there happens to be a situation where the churches are financially not able to help everyone? Are the Christians / churches supposed to just stand by and watch people suffer or perhaps even die ....as long as they can ensure that the government does not help? Please understand that I am not trying to be rude or cause any offence. I am just looking at a possible 'other side of the coin' so to speak. And wondering what Christians and churches are expected to do?

Thanks for listening / reading. And I apologise to the mods if my question is not suitable for this thread. I was thinking the issue is related but maybe I was mistaken?

Thanks again.
