Earth is shaped like a lumpy potato

15:08 05 April 2011 by Ferris Jabr

A sleek satellite orbiting Earth has confirmed that the planet is not the simple squashed sphere we often imagine it to be. It is, in fact, more like a lumpy potato.

Nearly a year's worth of gravitational measurements from the European Space Agency's Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) have yielded a colourful map portraying the geoid

Of course, what I would like to see is an analysis on how much "rising sea levels" is ice melt vs. sinking of the North American side of the globe.

Video unavailable. Have to go look later.

But the image looks a bit like areas with most recent volcanism have highest gravity or mass, which makes sense in that the content of metallic and heavy elements would be much higher.

As for oceans rising, read somewhere lately a figure of 2mm, I think per year. That could almost be accounted for by sediment. Never see sediment discussed as part of the equations, but in my house I get 2mm of dust in a week! So besides dust, add in rocks, sand & soil, tree stumps and so forth, it's surprising the oceans don't rise a lot more.

I'm not sure about the lumpy potato comparison. I'm thinking more like a piece of shriveled up fruit.

My tired brain can't seem to grasp how the whole "The new geoid map will be useful for studying ocean circulation, ice dynamics, sea-level change and earthquakes," bit of it works. Maybe I'll come back and read it again later, after a nap. Or some caffeine. Or both.
