They are beginning to recognise the power of healthy gut bacteria, especially seeing that the average adult carries up to five pounds of bacteria - trillions of microbes - in their digestive tract. Probiotics are commonly consumed as part of fermented foods with specially added active live cultures, such as in yogurt, soy yogurt or as dietary supplements. Probiotics are also delivered in fecal transplants, in which stool from a healthy donor is delivered like a suppository to an infected patient. A study published in Nutritional Neuroscience from The Great Plains Laboratory, has shown that HPHPA levels - the chemical byproduct of the clostridia bacteria - are much higher in the urine of autistic children. Those treated with antibiotics effective against clostridia show a decrease in symptoms of autism. More here

Sorry if this is a tad off topic. Interestingly, a lot of research is now being done on Parkinson's which many think could start off as something outside the brain, possibly due to gut related bacteria. "We know thatParkinson's is caused by the progressive loss of brain cells (neurones) in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra, which produces the chemical dopamine. As the cells die, less dopamine is produced and transported to the striatum, the area of the brain that co-ordinates movement. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease though a medication called levodopa has proved effective in relieving some symptoms." The link is about two years old now, but more and more funds are being put into this type of research. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13469716

Guest
Interesting. Makes one wonder how much of an upset is caused by all the over processed foods, artificial ingredients, and other junk that's in the food we eat today. Then there's the genetically modified stuff that on one has ever eaten before. Who knows what that'll do.

Yet autism has often suddenly appeared right after vaccination. Hard to believe there isn't something going on.
