"My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"

Quoting Psalm 22 - Had God forsaken Him?  Had the Holy Spirit left Him? (Deut. 31:6) - Had Jesus spoken without the Holy Spirit? (Mark 13:11)

No, I don't believe so.  I believe it has to do with the affliction that Jesus was suffering.  That we all will suffer at some point, to be given the opportunity to come to repentance.   (Remember Job?)  Study the word affliction in the Scriptures.  It is consistently a part of the process.

Psalm 22:24

Jesus was asking if God had forsaken Him in the matter spoken of in the above verse.

For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

I'm not sure how to answer those questions, but I like your comments.  

Jesus was there as our substitute, so whether Jesus said those words on His behalf or our behalf or both, I'm not sure.  But one thing I know....  "When He cried out, He heard."

Praise God!  HE HEARD !!!!

NO...Jesus was living in the flesh and it was His flesh that cried out at that moment..He still had the Spirit until he gave Him up at His time of death!

Matthew 27:46 And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

47 Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "This one is calling for Elijah."

This verse that Jesus spoke here was recognized by the Jews, as per verse 47. It is a reference to Psalm 22:2

2 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why so far from my call for help, from my cries of anguish?

3 My God, I call by day, but you do not answer; by night, but I have no relief.

27 The poor will eat their fill; those who seek the LORD will offer praise. May your hearts enjoy life forever!"

28 All the ends of the earth will worship and turn to the LORD; All the families of nations will bow low before you.

29 For kingship belongs to the LORD, the ruler over the nations.

30 All who sleep in the earth will bow low before God; All who have gone down into the dust will kneel in homage.

31 And I will live for the LORD; my descendants will serve you.

32 The generation to come will be told of the Lord, that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn the deliverance you have brought.

Not only a reference, but a prophecy which came out and played before them that day. It is a prediction of what happened at the crucifixion, almost line for line.

This was meant to be a sign to the Jews. It shows a man suffering defeated, wondering if God has deserted him. But, in the end, God triumphs. From utter defeat, victory!

munari - I am right with you on this one - I fully believe that Jesus was well prepared for this "final" trial.  I believe that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit in all that He did and said, and this was no exception.

(Question for another thread, but no one might understand if it was there: what would your final words be?  Jesus was to quote Scripture.)

I believe that the crowd did not understand because they did not have their hearts on Scripture - perhaps others standing by (Mary, John, Joseph of Arimathea) understood.
