ICAM. I always have to wonder about those posts here about being broke and asking for help. Yet, they are on the internet - how 'bout starting off by turning off that internet service? Your 'McDonalds' comment hit too. At Thanksgiving time, a woman came through the drive through at the bank to cash a check from her in-laws - on the memo line was written "travelling expense/Thanksgiving". I couldn't cash the check because there was a memo on the account that all personal checks had to be held due to constant NSF activity. What's wrong with this picture? The woman didn't even have gas money to travel to the in-laws for a holiday, and couldn't cash a check to get it, but her three kids were in the van munching out of McDonald's bags. I can so relate to the 'cutting back' and being poor. Been there, done that, more times than I care to remember. And we didn't have cable, or cell phones, or call-waiting, or any of the other "must haves". Even now, when we are doing well, there are a hundred things we 'need' (new storm door to replace the one being held closed by a bungee cord, lol) and even more that we simply want, but can't afford by paying cash only. So, they will wait. You are so right - priorities.

Guest yod
Do you know Africa? This is one WORLD Shiloh. One world we share. We share it with people in poverty. WHO HAVE NO CHOICE. And if you think poverty has options let me take you on a tour. Let me see if I can follow the logic here. There is no minimum wage in Africa...so America will become that way if we don't raise it to at least $8 hour? But...then who will take care of Africa and the rest of the world? We better raise it to at least $14.39 an hour...don't you think?

What's your opinion? Should people be protected by laws that say that those earning minimum wage should be subsidized by the Fed to make up the difference in any financial void caused by low paying jobs? If it was raised substantially (say by another $5.00/ hr) would companies simply pass the cost off to the consumer, or would they just eat the loss? Have fun. t. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow!! I didn't know minimum wage was that low. You can get a job at McDonald's in Kodiak Alaska and the starting wage is $10.00 an hr. Are you sure minimum wage is that low? Guest shiloh357
I hear yah!. I hear where your coming from. Your answer to the question that I put is, NO The poor do not require or deserve a SUBSISTENCE LIVING. Subsistence living is EARNED. It is not something we deserve to have handed to us. Many of the poor in the US are that way because they choose to be that way. They would prefer to live off the government dole, as opposed to getting an education. Â But if you deprive a man of sustenance you will have to control him with the whip or the gun. Refuse to learn from history and GUESS WHAT! No one is being deprived ( at least in America). Anyone here has the ability to get Federal money and go to school and learn more to get a better job. The government will throw money at college students if they apply. Student loans are the easiest loans to get. There is no excuse in the US for anyone not to go to school if they want to. You gotta have some drive though. You have to want to improve. It is not the government's job to support you. The government can help you in a pinch, but it is not the government's job to house, clothe and feed you. Does the UK have a minimum wage set by law? t. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes we do but I fall very short of it and as I'm just a lowly trainee they can get away with paying me peanuts (well... I could just about afford a packet, I suppose). I'm glad I still live with my parents or I would not be able to eat! (I realise I've answered this waaay after the question was asked but I haven't been online for a while!)
