For those who believe that the Sabbath is not Sunday or a particular day, and that the Sabbath is ANY DAY, what is your exegesis of this passage:

Matthew 24:20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Then I would also as a side note ask: "Can prayer change a preordained day of judgment in the last days?"

Anxiously awaiting your interpretations.........(you know who you are. :) )

Suzanne

Correct & of course, Matthew 24 in context is referring to Israel & not the Church. The Jewish Seventh-day Sabbath pertains to the nation of Israel alone. The Christian believers' new day of resurrection & rejoicing - besides being EVERY day of the week! - is now Sunday, the Lord's Day.

Both the sabbath and circumcision were Jehovah's special I.D. marks with respect to His earthly people, Israel.

GOD BLESS ISRAEL AND KEEP HER STRONG! (AND LIFT THE BLINKERS TOO)

This was not just to the Jewish in that time. This was in answer to the disciples asking, "When will the time be?"

Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Now, what did He mean by the Sabbath? Why did Jesus say to "PRAY" about the particular time to not be set for the winter?

Matthew 24:20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

(So, you are saying that this statement was not "literal"???)

Surely not?

I still would like to see exegesis rather than opinion on this passage, using Scriptures and word meanings. Looking forward to your studies.

In His Truth,

Suzanne

All I have time for is opinion...but you know I have one!!

This doesn't necessarily mean that an event would happen in the winter or on a Sabbath day...but rather is saying that there will be a small window of time to escape and they (we?) should be prepared to go before the last minute.

At least, that's the way I see it....

And my question is, why wouldn't you believe that this is EXACTLY what He is saying, since it IS EXACTLY what He is saying? :)

Unless you can show to me Scripturally that there is another meaning, I would take His Word EXACTLY as He spoke It, why wouldn't we? I just don't think it's a mystery. It sounds very clear and absolute.

That begins the period of great distress. We should notice what is being said here

Matthew 24:26 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

v. 17 Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house.

v. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak.

v. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!

The urgency by Jesus cannot be overlooked. He is literally telling anyone in Judea to get out of Dodge! The Sabbath is supposed to be a day of rest (not even a church day!) How horrible it would be to be sitting on the deck drinking Country Time lemonade, to suddenly have to run like mad as far away as you can get. So, I don't see that the Sabbath HAS to be a particular day, but that those in Judea should pray they don't have to flee on that day.

Having to flee during the winter w/o time to pack any clothes? You can see why it is dreadful for pregnant mothers. Jesus is basically saying to leave with the clothes on your back and baby in your womb. Don't mess around trying to pack food and more clothes

I liked Yod's answer, and yet I would have expected him to answer with a bias, but he didn't. That speaks well for him.

Also in connection with what others have said, can you imagine waiting until the last moment before "getting out of Dodge"? If it were on the Sabbath, those who maintain Jewish custom would not be able to leave - right? Also if it were winter, it would make it most difficult. I see these verses connected with the verses in Revelation when the saints are "called out" of Babylon. If you wait too long, it may be too late.

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

So in context of your reasoning, that the Sabbath can be ANY day.........then, in your understanding, the text is basically saying, "Pray that your flight is NOT ON ANY DAY AT ALL? Do you believe that these things of the end will even happen at all? That is really your understanding of these Words?

I really cannot understand how something so direct, is being twisted into whatever we choose to want it to be?

So if Jesus said this to you today, would you really interpret it as anything else other than what He actually said, or would you try to reason that He meant something else?

:)

Yes, I agree hubertdorm. My focus is on the fact that even Jesus Himself refers to the Sabbath as a specific day in His instruction to the disciples. The question is directed at the fact that we do not observe the Sabbath as a specific day anymore, yet it is referred to as one specific day by Jesus.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
