S.J., your story absolutely humbled me. How easy it is to get caught up in our busy lives and become frustrated by our petty problems.

I threw a hissy fit the other day when my VCR went on the fritz! Oh, how angry I was! O woe was me, I couldn't watch my movie!

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I felt sorry for myself over a film I couldn't see while there are people in my town who are homeless.

God have mercy on me a sinner.

warm regards

-bud

I've often wondered how we should react in the situations where people ask us for change or money. Some reek of alcohol and so we think that they must be using it for more alcohol. We don't want to deny those who may actually want the money for food, but with all of the tricks and cons people pull, how do we know who to trust? Could we be entertaining angels unaware and refusing them? It can be a real dilemma! I want to be able to help everyone, but I can't.

How do you handle the situation? What do you think is the scriptural way to deal with it?

Dear brother Keith, I think your point is a valid one and well stated. However, it's not in Gods character (I believe) to present a begger as a drunk.

Faithie,

I don't understand what you're saying. Can you expound on that a bit? I didn't use the word beggar or drunk, so I'm not sure what you mean. I was talking about anyone who asks us for money and how we might respond. It happens that some of them reek of alcohol, are unkempt, and appear "homeless." I don't know how else to word it. I wasn't trying to be unkind.

This is what I do currently. If they say they're hungry, I'll offer to take them to the nearest place and get them something to eat. 90% of the time I hear, "Forget it, man!" If they want money for the bus, I'll offer to wait with them and make sure they get on. They never want that.
