And you are naive if you don't think they'll try, but it's OK, the grown-ups will protect you.

Ya know, in Brandenburg (later renamed Berlin) they thought those bungling clowns in Munich were a joke. "National Socialism (acronym: NAZI) would never be accepted in Germany!" they thought.

Thank God for Steve Bannon having the clarity of mind to reverse this denial of reality in Washington

One thing I have learned in my 60 plus years, anyone who uses a term like "the grown-ups" is anything but.

Ironic that you bring up National Socialism, since that is where we will be headed if these two have their way.

And you will be cheering all the way now that you are 100% behind Trump.

You're just another clueless liberal who prefers cowardice to confronting the enemy. Maybe you can go hide back in the shadows?

My guess is that you voted for the only socialist in the last election. Did you feel the Bern?

There is no point in helping a person who doesn't want to see. Close those eyes tighter! Grown-ups will protect you.

Actually I voted for the only Conservative, a guy named Gary Johnson.  I left the liberal voting to the Trump followers like yourself.

Since you are going to protect me, I assume you have already been through your local MEPS and are ready to head off to the middle east to fight the enemy head on!  By your own words it would be cowardice for you to be doing anything else.

I stand corrected again! I'm supremely surprised you aren't a Bernie voter.

Gary Johnson is hardly conservative, but I can respect that vote. I do hold mostly Libertarian views, but the GOP candidate was not a Republican this time, and Gary Johnson was stoned in every interview I saw of him.

And I've been fighting that war for about 25 years now. Almost killed by terrorists in Israel several times now, and do know what I'm talking about.

Unlike anyone sitting here on a screen complaining about those who are willing to protect them.

I'm a bit old for army boots now, but my son is military. He will be a man so cowards can complain from afar.

Please thank your son (for me) for his service.  And thanks to you, as well.  Full disclosure:  I served for 6 years in the Navy in the 70s, but was fortunate that no major wars were going on in the Mediterranean region where I was deployed at the time.

Now back to the regularly scheduled OP and the topic "are we at war?"

Shortly after 9/11, we listened to President Bush and VP Cheney talk about a war that would go on for "years and years" and it was a war on "terror."

That always bothered me because terror is a tactic - a means to an end, but not the end itself.  What was behind the terrorism?  THAT was what we should be fighting.  And it bothered me to hear it said that the war would go on for years.  That was unrealistic (given our hot and cold political system) from both a political AND a financial standpoint.

So then it was predictable that the people would 'tire' of this endless war, and elect an anti-war president to replace Bush.  So then we knee-jerked the other way, and Obama completely muffed up the war his predecessor handed to him.  He telegraphed our troop departure times, and his actions (or lack thereof) caused the subsequent chaos in Iraq and contributed to the formation of ISIS.

So now we have President Trump as commander-in-chief, and we're likely about to knee-jerk in yet another direction.

My question to you:  Do you see a way to engage in this war in a productive and meaningful way?  Is there a happy medium somewhere (between the Bush and the Obama tactics) that will result in the desired result of ISIS being defeated - or at least made irrelevant?

Blessings,

-Ed

Do you think if Bush had said we were going to fight Islam it would have been better? Everyone knows we're fighting an ideology but identifying it as "Islam" would push a billion people to the other side against us. This is probably the best compromise, though I agree it's hard to fight an enemy you won't identify.

The most important thing we could do to defeat ISIS is help the people suffering from ISIS already, and show our allies that America is not only great again, but a dependable ally. We don't need a a lot of space to set up a few bases around them and just start closing in. Let them know we're not going to allow them to round up entire villages and behead them.

We can bomb them into the 7th century when they stick their heads up out of the rathole they will be hiding in.

We could support Israel's efforts against terrorism and benefit from their intelligence gathering.

The biggest thing that worries me about Bannon is that his past remarks sound like he wants to go to all out war.

I feel like he has too much sway over the president and other calmer and more experienced people are not being heard.

I'm of the opinion that Donald J. Trump marches to his own drummer pretty much all the time and is not easily swayed by anyone.
