When we first connected to the internet about 12 years ago I began staying online until well past midnight two or three nights a week.

Typically I have been a night owl, and being self-employed it was not a problem for me to delay getting up in the mornings when not working on any contracts that required me to be up with the larks.

These days, being mostly retired but still active in DIY at home, I rarely stay up after 11.30pm and seem to be getting up earlier than before more often than not.

Maybe I'm morphing from night owl to morning lark!

Right now, with clocks 1 hour ahead for Daylight Saving, it is 6.43pm on Saturday 31st October in NZ and nearly dinner time. Apparently it's 1.45am on Saturday morning in New York. If you're in that time zone and reading this soon after my posting it, I would say you are a night owl.

Some users I correspond with tell me they don't sleep well, and it's been like 4 am in the morning, or heading towards sunrise as we have been online with each other. I recall one who seemed to get up about 2 am and go online having had as much sleep as he could manage.

What about you? Night Owl or Morning Lark?

I sleep well but I'm definitely a night owl.   Although recently I've been turning in earlier some nights.

Actually, time doesn't seem to matter a whole lot when you can just post something that's read on the other side of the world in seconds.

Yes, isn't that amazing?   When I was a teen, I had pen pals in various countries.   Some letters took two weeks to arrive.

Early to bed / Early to rise / Keeps away the bags below your eyes... :D

Hello Michael. Research tends to show that rising early has some health benefits, especially when we get off to bed early too. It won't work out for some people I'm sure.

When I stayed up late in my 20s and 30 it affected me quite badly. These days early mornings are my favourite time of the day. In the summer months I often enjoy a walk in the woods at dawn.

My first born, 37 years ago, converted me from late night to early morning (he’d wake up at 5:30a).
Ever since then I’ve been an early morning, though recently retired still up by 7.

Have you ever heard of circadian rhythms? Google it.

Yes, I'm familiar with the term. It gets talked about frequently and there is a currently a song on the radio that references circadian rhythms. I tend to think about cicadas when I hear the term.

There is a concern that the light from screens is messing around with these rhythms, particularly among those not yet adults.

I definitely have a rhythm I like to keep.

Thanks for your astute input, @missmuffet

Thanks for your comment, Speks. I see you are from Ireland which I believe has some beautiful scenery. I am taking a break from daily walks after decades of outdoor work that included mowing lawns. I was also going out regularly with a group doing tramping, or hiking as some call it. These were enjoyable until recently when repetitive strain, neuropathy, and general fatigue let me know it was time to slow down.

Hello everyone, I am a lark. I have to get up at 5 for work. And I like my quiet mornings. Alone time. Me, God, and you guys. LoL. Even on the weekends I’m usually up by 6. I like to go to sleep by 10-11 and I’m only 41. When I was young and partying I was night owl for sure. But since I met Jesus I’m an early bird. LoL.
