Seems to me science makes far more claims based on ' authority' then ever Christianity has made.

An atheism explain why science and reason works?  They are dependant on a Christian world view for there understanding of why it works.

Thanks for your thoughts!  These in particular caught my attention.

I wonder who is the one who gives the "authority"?  Is it all of them (scientists) or only the ones who agree to give a certain scientist or group of scientists the authority to speak for all of them?  I wonder if they argue about this.

I read one time that an atheist would not exist if there were no God.  They seem to have faith in science so in a way they are believers.  I believe the Creator (God) and His creation (science) go hand in hand. As far as I know they have not found the "end" of the universe in the heavens and they have not found the microscopic "end" of living cells.  This was written on a science learning site:

"Currently, the smallest thing that can be seen using a microscope is about the size of an atom. Anything smaller is below the current limit of resolution of the electron microscope, although the microscopic scale is likely to encompass even smaller objects as the technology of electron microscopes becomes more advanced."

God has such a great sense of humor.  Infinity!

Science is so vast, covering so many specialist subjects that no one scientist is an expert in them all.

This mean one scientist or atheist will quote an ' expert' in a field as an authority or they will use an celebrity scientist as an authority, like Dawkins or Brian Cox's etc etc

It isn't just atheists, Christians also appeal to authority figures, with wel know preachers or apologists.

@Who me  I was being a touch sarcastic in my question as to who gives them authority since I know that mankind has only been given any Godly purposeful authority by the Father.  The rest is authority they give to themselves or take from others.

Romans 13:1 (NKJV) Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

Mark 11:29-30 (NKJV) But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”

Jesus never did tell them by whose authority he was doing his miracles and forgiving sin because they could not answer his question for they did not know the answer.  Thousands of years later mankind still fights and argues to not allow God to have the final authority and the last word.  Many years ago I determined to stop fighting.  God's will be done in my life. Of course this does not stop me from grumbling at times about some of the human beings who God has allowed to have authority over others. Hey, I'm only human and a female to boot. LOL!

Stephen Hawking was arguably the brightest scientist. His claims appear to both be true, so why would we trust religious claims?

We ought to trust in Jesus and His Holy Scripture, and not in science or religion.
