Confess Sin and Forget It

Confession is key.

Have you considered the first thing that God did when He came to speak with Adam after he'd sinned? He got him to "confess" his (Adam and Eve) sin. 

Genesis 3:[9] And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
[10] And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
[11] And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
[12] And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
[13] And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Then God covered them after they'd confessed.

[21] Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Israel understood confession.

Leviticus 5:[5] And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

David understood confession.

Psalm 32:[5] I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Solomon understood confession.

Proverbs 28:[13] He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

John the Prophet understood confession.

Mark 1:[4] John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
[5] And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

God offers us the opportunity to "confess" our sin and receive salvation (salvation = σωτηρία sōtēría, so-tay-ree'-ah; feminine of a derivative of G4990 as (properly, abstract) noun; rescue or safety (physically or morally):—deliver, health, salvation, save, saving). Notice that the word "salvation" encompasses more than the soul. 

Romans 10:[8] But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
[9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
[10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

John the Apostle understood confession.

1 John 1:[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Confession of sin releases us from it. 

Psalm 103:[12] As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Once you've confessed your sin, it is to be remembered no more.

And most importantly, Jesus ministers directly to God the Father on our behalf based on our confession (profession).

Hebrews 4:[14] Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession (profession - ὁμολογία homología, hom-ol-og-ee'-ah; from the same as G3670; acknowledgment:—con- (pro-)fession, professed).
