When I grew up and fully realized how toxic and emotionally neglectful my parents (who both claim to be sincere Christians) actually were. I had to learn that just because they were older than me didn’t mean they were actually wise or mature, unfortunately. Their influence also really damaged my relationship with God. To have parents both claiming to be Christians and behaving in such a way was a real obstacle for me.
As a child I always sought God and talked to Him, though I didn’t fully understand it as a little child… I think that’s really what got me through to adulthood. Both of my other siblings are severely damaged. My older brother is very mentally disturbed and is totally dependent on my mother as a 40 something adult - there are serious emotional and behavioral issues there that were of course never addressed in a productive way by my emotionally neglectful parents. They would rather just put him on drugs and hope the problems somehow went away. And on top of that I have been told by said parent that if/when they die with no plan for dependent mentally/behaviorally disturbed older brother’s care that I should be responsible for taking in my dependent older brother. I am not a wealthy person by the way and live a very modest life in a tiny home. I have been gas-lighted and told that I am a selfish person for not being willing to potentially destroy my own life and marriage by personally taking on such a burden that was created by others.
It took me a while but since getting away from their toxic influence, God has been revealing His love to me and has provided me with a refuge for healing to take place. It is a difficult process.
Another hard but worthy lesson I’ve been having to learn from all of that is not to rely on any human’s opinion for validation or approval. Only God knows what I’ve been through and only God can judge me.

Not to trust these eyes of flesh. When I believed that the Lord abandoned me, I was mistaken. When I believed that He hated me, I was wrong. When I thought that I was a dead man, His work in me had only just begun.

The hardest lesson arrived when, after decades of wandering aimlessly with no home, I learned that my path wasn't aimless at all. Everything led to me being in the right place at the proper time.

How to avoid being dominated, intimidated, manipulated, and seduced.

I could write a book.

Give God your life. You can not do it on your own. A hard lesson to learn with many consequences.
